I've been experiencing the same problem since I upgraded from Lion, but I noticed that even if I don't turn my wireless keyboard on, the light on the keyboard comes on almost as soon as I power up the iMac (like it's waking up automatically). Short of taking the batteries out of the keyboard is there a way to make sure the keyboard stays off while the computer is booting up?

Aug 3, 2011 9:16 AM in response to David2011

Thanks David. Apparently I wasn't holding the power button long enough. I will definitely try turning the keyboard off before booting up my iMac next time. Hopefully that solves the problem. I'm just glad to hear that there are others who are experiencing the same problem as me. My iMac is less than a month old and it's been extremely frustrating trying to figure this out.

Same problem here with my 2011 21" iMac that I purchased in mid July.

I have a wireless keyboard, trackpad and mouse. When I power everything off and turn off the power strip then later turn on the computer it boots into Safe Mode.

Also, the Wi-Fi (formerly Airport) icon in the menubar is just the empty outline and clicking on it gives me the message "Wi-Fi: No hardware installed". Rebooting fixes this.

I spent an hour on the phone with an Applecare manager who had me run Disk Utility repair after booting into the recovery partition. Disk Utility found some disk errors, which I thought was strange for a new computer, and repaired them.

The problem still exists though.

Aug 4, 2011 1:12 AM in response to Michael Benda

Michael

Having some disk errors is not really strange at all. These will just be lost fragments that occur occasionally so I wouldn't worry unduly about them

The reason you see no wi-fi is because your iMac will have booted into safe mode. All connections are disabled in safe mode and you need to reboot before you can use your Mac properly

To prevent your iMac booting into this safe mode, either switch the keyboard off completely (by pressing and holding the keyboard button until the green light goes out) OR simply press the keyboard on/off button (right hand side of the keyboard) briefly and wait 15 seconds before switching on your iMac

It seems that the bluetooth keyboard is giving out some kind of a signal while it is waking up or switching on that OSX Lion is mistaking for a stuck key. It's a weird thing happening but no doubt Apple will get their heads around it and fix the problem eventually

I have had the exact same issue since upgrading to Lion OS. It has caused me no end of trouble as relatively new to Mac's and didn't really understand what was going on.

Two lots of telephone advice from Applecare failed to sort the problem.

Three visits to the Genius Bar resulted in a new hard drive, being told there is nothing wrong, then providing them with a video showing the problem only to be told that it was 3rd party software that was causing the problem by making my Mac boot into safe mode.

Originally searched for clues on the net but no luck. Last night came across this discussion and the clouds parted with a ray of light shining down.

Now instead of more or less instantaneously turning on my Bluetooth keyboard I leave it a little while and then do it. End result no further problem.

Thank you all for highlighting this solution.

Aug 11, 2011 6:04 AM in response to andreas184

Hello there,

I am having the exact same problem with exact the same sympthomps.

I figured it out because when my wife boots the iMac, she has no problems, but when I do: safe mode.

She turns the iMac on, and later the keyboard because she realized she forgot that.

I always turn on the iMac and keyboard close together, and voilà: safe mode.

But the problem is not due to Lion, because I had this issue since Snow Leopard. To be exact: From the beginning.

The problem just continued with Lion...

Kindest regards

Hello All,

I have just posted a question "why does my iMac boot in safe mode ?" I then found this discussion thread, so thanks to you all. I have been tearing what little hair I have left out over this for two weeks. Apple UK have been disappointing unresponsive and as a real Apple fan I have suddenly become dis-illusioned. However this discussion has helped enormously and I will point Apple Tech Support at it.

I look forward to Apple telling us of the real solution.

Aug 13, 2011 12:34 PM in response to andreas184

Really disapointed on the support from Apple on this - Just spent half an hour on hold to have a Tech try to convince me that the problem is the UPS that the iMac is plugged in to.... gee just so happens to be the same UPS my previous iMac ran with for 2 years with no issue.... I don't have time to deal with being treated like a 2 year old by a Tech reading a support help sheet so I will deal with booting twice each and every morning until Apple wakes up and solves this problem

Aug 13, 2011 2:06 PM in response to phenrycissp

The temporary fix definitely seems to be to let the iMac boot up before switching on the keyboard. I have tried to bring this to the Apple tech guys attention but have had zero response. I guess given time the workaround will be addressed with a fix. At the least Apple Techs should all read this thread and save future users the frustration many of us have experienced. I am not at all impressed with their response to date.

Aug 31, 2011 9:39 PM in response to andreas184

Thank Jebus I found this thread. I cleared out all logs on my Mac mini 2010 and found the:

"Cache file /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/IOKitPersonalities_x86_64. ioplist.gz is out of date; not using"

line in my system log.

For what it's worth, this problem *only* started when adding a new bluetooth keyboard. I was using a Magic Mouse and an Apple USB keyboard for months and did not have any issues. Only after I added the bluetooth keyboard did I start having this issue.

Lion starts sometimes in safe mode
