What is replacing iDVD and iWeb

I noticed that iDVD or iWEB are no longer available in the App Store (If they ever were). Does anyone know what Apple is recommending as software replacements for these producs, or are they being up dated and not available yet?

Agree but iLife 11 is Snow Leopard not Lion and before the App Store existed. The App Store is where all software will be available, upgradable, just like the App's via iTunes...

I know that there are other good WEB applications out there and it could be that Apple is going to recommend one over trying to keep up or they are going to come out with a killer WEB App and positioning themselves. Just don't know since nothing has been put up on Apple.com and why I am asking here.

likewise I just don't know what one would recommend to replace iDVD so was asking about it too... both are no where to be found in the App Store.

When was that update released?? I got v 7.1.2 on 7/23. The reason for my curiosity about iDVD comes from my need to burn a disk for a project that I am working on and the themes of iDVD, themes 7 and 6, don't work as they should and I was trying to find the reason by consulting with Apple. When I tried to show them the problem I went to one of their computers and found that there was no iDVD accessible, it was then that the sales person told me of the iDVD and iWeb issue. I am running Lion but my machine was a Snow Leapord machine which I upgraded to Lion and iDVD was working fine in Snow Leapord but not so good in Lion.

It is now is apparent that iWeb, and iDVD, will no longer be supported by Apple since it's reported that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD. iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:

Features Unavailable When Publishing to a Non-Mac Server:

â—¼ Password protection

â—¼ Blog and photo comments

â—¼ Blog search

â—¼ Hit counter

â—¼ RSS Feed Widget

All of these issues can be replaced with 3rd party optionsl There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and myself have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.

There's no telling how long the iLife 11 boxed disk will continue to include iWeb and iDVD but I would imagine until the current stock runs out.

I have extensively used iDVD and DVD Studio Pro over the years. iDVD is wonderful for quick professional looking DVD's for friends and family. I have used DVD SP to make several DVD's for the local historical society which they have professionally duplicated and sell as fund raisers.

I am about to get a new iMac and as I understand iMovie, iPhoto, and Garage Band will be added to my App Store account for future use. OK, I will get out my old iLife disks and install iDVD but I would willingly pay to have iDVD in the App Store, (Same for SP which has been eliminated from Final Cut Family)

Why doesn't Apple put it there? Yes the future of video is likely streaming but for now DVD's are still mainstream! The historical society has raised $1,000's from the DVD's sold, yet without Apple's wonderful programs how do they raise money with online streaming which we are told is the future?

I do not understand how Apple has spent so much time and money developing two such wonderful, useful, and NECESSARY programs and just throw them out at a time (and dare I say for a long time in the future) they are needed.

I imagine if Apple were to add iDVD and DVD Studio Pro to the App Store they would be right up there towards the top of Best Sellers. Just look as iMovie, iPhoto, etc. are there. What does anyone who buys their first Mac do to make authored menu driven DVD's and does not have an old iLife '11 DVD or Final Cut Studio around?

I am likely just venting and "preaching to the choir" posting in this forum but I would like to imagine someone at Apple might realize they could sell a "few" copies and make their loyal supporters very happy!

I'm on your side, but think you're wrong about this. I think we're in the minority. I think most people find burning movies to DVD too complicated. I bet that Apple has done research and concluded that a very small percentage of users (successfully) use iDVD.

edit: To illustrate my point, look at how many people are posting on the boards about iDVD being dropped. I think this is the second thread. And my post made it two pages long. Basically, no one cares.

I too wish that Apple would still include iDVD with new computers, even if they don't promote it. Maybe the reason they don't is because they don't want to provide tech support for it. iMovie and iDVD are arguably the most complicated consumer products that Apple offers. They probably figure that people who really want the capability will buy Final Cut Pro. And those people will at least be semi-pro and not require much support. And they're probably right.

In a more general sense, I love Apple, as long as you are on the same page as they are. And they're starting to lose me with such a strong focus on streaming and iPhone apps. But when iTunes and iPhoto first came out, I thought it was incredible. I was totally in sync with Apple's vision. I work as a professional video editor, and when iDVD first came out and it suddenly became possible to quickly and inexpensively burn DVDs, the entire video industry was thrilled, no more 3/4 inch screeners! It's amazing how quickly a revolutionary product such as iDVD has been unceremoniously dropped.
