Logic 9.1.4, Lion, and serialization

Hey all,

Long time Logic Pro user here. I originally bought Logic Pro 7, which came with a USB xs key dongle. Upgraded to LP 8 and 9, and have been using LP 9 without issue on my main machine. I have a 2011 i7 Macbook Pro which I installed Lion onto as an upgrade from 10.6.8. (i.e. not a clean install...) I installed Logic Pro 9 onto the MBP, and immediately updated it to 9.1.4 before launching. Upon launching, Logic asked for my LP 9 serial number, and either a serial number or to insert my xs key. I had the xs key handy, so I put that in. Logic authorized and launched just fine. I set some stuff up, quit, and restarted.

Upon restarting, I took the xs key out of the USB slot. I launched Logic again, and it again asked for my serial number. I put it in again, put the xs key back in, and it authorized once more. Well, the issue is that now Logic will ONLY run in an authorized state if I have the xs key present on the Macbook Pro. If I take it out, it'll go back to requesting a serial number.

Here are the diagnostic steps I've taken thus far:

-I tossed all cache files from /users/me/library pertaining to Logic

-I tossed all prefs files from /users/me/libarary pertaining to Logic

-I rebooted from a separate partition and repaired permissions for the system/partition Logic is installed on

-I reset PRAM and the power manager in case there was something going on with the USB slot

-I tossed and reinstalled the application only from the installation DVD, then re-updated to 9.1.4

I'm at my wit's end and am not sure what else to try to get Logic 9.1.4 to remain authorized on this machine. It sounds like it may be a bonafide bug on Apple's part with either the OS or how Logic is playing with the OS. Any suggestions on what to do here? Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Thanks guys,

-Chris

Thanks for the info, Oddgrooves.

Sadly, this hardly seems like a good solution on the part of Apple. I actually still have an old G5 running Logic Pro 7 that I use in a separate space for some simple sound design stuff. I still need that XS key to be here, or Logic will no longer run on that machine. No, the preferred solution here is that Apple actually puts out an update that prods Lion to "remember" the XS key and deal with it properly. Or, they update Logic Pro 9 to accept a Logic 8 upgrade serial as good enough for the Logic 9 upgrade to function. Sending the physical XS key back to Apple isn't a viable workaround. There are going to be literally thousands of Logic customers in the same boat we're in. Is Apple going to require *all* of us to send in our XS keys and get serial numbers instead?

I'm holding out for a legitimate software fix. This is pro software, Apple. How about adding some pro support back into your shiny new OS? Forcing your customers to mail in a dongle that you yourself created and required us all to use as of five years ago hardly seems like a professional solution.

So, in case anyone at Apple is actually reading this thread, here's a potentially much easier solution: Make a small XS reader app that we can download. It will only have one function in life: To read the XS serial number off the XS key. We insert the key, it gives us the number, and we can then either call Apple support and "trade in" the number for a newer, functioning serial number...or....enter the number onto a webpage somewhere that you'll create, which will "exchange" the XS serial for a working, current serial. Yes, it would require minimal code support, but given the thousands of professional Logic Pro users out there who have stuck with the platform over the years, it seems worth it to me.

-OR-

Find another workaround here, so we don't have to go through this monkey business. 🙂

Just out of curiosity, did you try this? I feel like I know people who have upgrades of upgrades, and the 'Logic 8 Upgrade' serial number worked to install 9. You said in the first post that Logic asked for 'either the XS Key or a serial.' If you reinstall or can get back to that screen again and put in your Logic 8 serial instead of the XS key, does that work?

I certainly could be wrong on this one.

Following from Zuelito's comment, that worked for me. I had the Logic 9 upgrade serial number, but dug around and found another serial number - the original Logic Studio Upgrade Pro serial. Entered this one in the field where it asks for XS key or serial and all is good. No more XS key! Good luck 🙂

This solution worked for me as well. I used the Logic Studio (1) upgrade serial at the prompt and am back to being XSKey free.

As someone who bought Logic Pro 7 and then used the XS key to upgrade my Mac Pro a few months ago I certainly won't be upgrading to Lion until this is sorted, sadly however I recently purchased a MBP to use the brilliant Mainstage App for gigs and it stubbornly refuses to behave with Logic (all the problems mentioned here seem to arise).

What I am struggling with is how to I access the XS key serial number. Nothing is written on the USB stick and I can't seem to interrogate it using the computer to find out?

If you have Logic 8 (first logic studio), then you can just use the serial number from that when it asks for a serial or XS Key in the installer. If you upgraded from 7 to 9, I think you're stuck with this issue until Logic releases an updage. You can report the issue directly to apple here:

According to other threads, the way to get a serial number from the XS Key is to contact Apple and send it in and they will exchange it for a serial number. There's no way to get a working number off the XS Key.

Fellow Logic users,

It's worth mentioning that the guys at Applecare (particularly the Logic experts) admit that Lion versus Logic Pro 7 upgrades is a recognised problem and provided documentation to support ownership of both Logic Pro 7 and Logic Studio 9 upgrade can be provided, they will provide the FULL Logic Studio serial to get rid of the constant request of Serial on boot up.

Great service from Apple.

If you're thinking of buying a second hand version of Logic Pro 7 on Ebay and then buying the upgrade of Logic Studio 9 to save a few dollars/pounds, then I think you'll be out of luck. Applecare were insistent on me providing proof of purchase of the original version of Logic Pro 7 way back in 2004.

Cheers,

Joe

Any followup on this? Hopefully I still have my 8 serial around somewhere but based on how the installer worked I was careful to hold on to the old dongle but just stuck the 8 documentation in a big pile of old junk, never expecting to need it again.

Apple REALLY needs a software fix for this, expecting people to send in the old dongle or provide proof of purchase from years ago is ridiculous. And is there an Apple line you can contact for that without having to pay a fee for "support"?

Thank goodness I tried out Lion on a separate partition before upgrading my real system or I'd be totally screwed. Off to drop Apple a line...
