RAID 1 mirror won't restore after making new disc spare

My mac pro has two sets of mirrored drives. One is the boot disk and another is used for storage. One of the drives on the storage set failed and was replaced by an identical new drive. I used the RAID utility to make the new drive a global spare but it has not proceeded to restore the RAID set. Any ideas? This is a hardware raid. I have had a drive failure before and did the same process and it worked fine.
