Mail smart mailbox not updating

I am having the exact same issue (i.e. no automatic/live updating until after leaving the mailbox and returning) after upgrading to Lion. The work-around is simple enough, but having a real fix would be much better.

did you try delete and create it again.?

Thanks. That's a good idea, though unfortunately it didn't work in my case. I created another Smart Mailbox of all my unread messages, and the new mailbox has the same issue (i.e. the list doesn't update until I leave and return to the mailbox).

Same here too must be a bug. Read in another thread something about GrowlMail possibly being the problem but I don't use that. Hope things will be back to normal soon...

I had previously been using GrowlMail and have to admit that I only noticed this problem occuring after I reinstated GM a couple of days after installing Lion. Have just deactivated GM and think that the error has now disappeared. Will report back if that's not the case.

It appears to be GrowlMail causing the problem (or, rather, GrowlMail and Mail are now incompatible with each other), as the smart mailbox I predominantly use is now updating as soon as a new message is received.

GrowlMail was installed but not working, so I'd completely forgotton about it being there.

Just removed it completely now and all is good in the world.

I don't have GrowlMail so I know the problem is different for me. And I have already deleted my old ones and made new ones and the issue is the same. If it helps here's my setup...I have a mailbox (not the inbox) where certain messages are placed already on the server before ever opening Mail.app. Then I have 6 smart mailboxes which filter mail from that mailbox a bit further for my purposes. So for example if I start my day and open Mail.app it might show 30 new messages in this certain mailbox and I would expect the sum of new messages in my 6 smart mailboxes to also show 30 and it does...only after I click on each of them so that they will update. What can this be???

I had the same issue, this old discussion helped me. Specifically, Re-indexing Spotlight.

Thanks for the reply. Unfotunately I have done this since installing Lion and it has not helped to this point. I have re-indexed Mail and Spotlight and rebuilt all my mailboxes to no success. If it helps to my rules are like this:

Match all rules

If message is in myMailbox

If message contains myString

Should be simple enough but doesn't work properly...

Same issue as Rick. Has there been any resolution?

The issue was resolved for me and several others my removing all traces of Growl and/or GrowlMail.
