System and Finder Preferences not saving

I'm very frustrated with OS X Lion.

First I hate the app windows in my face when I first start up my computer. There is a reason I quit them and shut off my computer. I don't want to see them every time I turn on my computer.

It's easy to shut off? Just go into system prefrences and uncheck "Restore Windows when quitting and re-opening apps". Easy except for one minor detail. My system preferences don't save. I uncheck it and restart guess what? It's checked again.

Preferences saving is not limited to the System prefereneces though. The finder and all my app preferences are not able to be saved either.

This is very frustrating.

This was it, thank you Mark23. It is a well needed solution.

FYI,

I am a photographer and my workflow on my MBP was stopped because none of my files could be deleted or renamed. So I used BATCHmod App (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/6440/batchmod) and changed the ownership for my user to R W X and for Staff to R W X, then checked the following at the bottom, Change Owenership and Privilidges, Unlock, Clear ACLs, and Apply to enclosed folders and files. This resolved my issue with changing file names etc.

But then on reboot my system preferences were not changing. so I followed Mark23's instructions and did this...

1. Open up Terminal (/Programs/Utilities/Terminal.app)

2. Enter "chmod -RN ~/Library/Preferences" (without the quotation marks)

3. Hit return.

Thanks Mark

Mark23,

Thank you this worked for me as well.

None of my preferances were saving.

When I ran "chmod -RN ~/Library/Preferences" (without the quotation marks) my Dock preferences where saved. But noticed my Adobe Bridge Preferences where not saving so I decided to run this on the whole Library and now everything works like a charm. **** what a hasstle this has been. And all the documentation out there by idiots with various solutions that didnt work!! lol

"chmod -RN ~/Library" (without the quotation marks) Worked!!

Have you taken the time to read the entire thread - which has been dormant for close to 10 months?

Have you tried any of what was suggested?

What were the results?

How does your situation relate to or differ from what has been shared here.

The fact is that there are several solutions offered, each of which worked for some people.

Without some effort on your part, it is unlikely that you'll see any more here.

Sorry if this seems curt, but your post is little more than "My tummy hurts."

My system: Macbook Pro with OSX 10.8.3 Mountain Lion

My problem was that the preferences in several application (Finder, System, Addressbook, and more) were not kept after changing them and loging on again.

When I added a new user account, then this new account did not have the problem.

The solutions suggested in this post, did not work for me.

My solution:

Assign the user with reading and writing rights the map: \Library\Preferences
