I can assure you that MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011 is absolutely INcompatible with any SSD in the market. The first what I used was some crucial crap (sorry for my language), I've got all possible headache what I could ever imagine, my system totally crashed 3(!!!) times. I changed sata cable 3 times, but still received a bunch of errors trying run any diagnostic apps. Then I ripped that cheap Chinese 'crucial' out and threw it in a bin. The next one was some quite expensive 'owc', which from beginning seemed not too bad, but was annormously slow - the maximum speed was around 100MB/s, till one nice sunny day it just died without any warning, right in the middle of doing backup, so I lost all my stuff. Then I put in one very cheap Kingston SSD, which was the best of those 3, but was even slower than 'owc', and of course my good, reliable MBP was quite glitchy and froze pretty often. Currently I use FireCuda, which is like regular HDD with some small addition of SSD, which I suspect is not working at all, because loading of my system from "full power off" takes about 12 minutes. At least I don't have glitches, sudden freezes and crashes of the system any more. That is MY experience with SSDs.

I have a 17" MBP brand new and tried to install an SSD this week but after a successful installation, it will not boot to the new drive. Put the original drive back in and it's all fine.

I cannot remember the manufacturer of the SSD but will come back and update this post with it.

I will be calling Apple to find out what to do as the drives aren't cheap and I would prefer an SSD to a fast SATA drive.

Change drive interconnect cable (the SATA cable) it is old and was never designed for anything as fast as an SSD.

An SSD with 2.5 INCH-INTERNAL and 3.0 Gb/s SATA you should be looking for. I bought the intel 320 series i hope that helps.

3.0GB/s is only SATA II.

If the 2011 Macbook Pro can be tested at SATA III - that actually runs at 6.0GB/s...So the OP would need to try testing this with a Money Back Guarantee for instance from OWC for the 6.0GB/s SSD drives. Some users have even reported being able to run dual 6.0GB/s SSD's in their 2011 MBP's with the 2.5" drive mount in place of their DVD drive.

That could have been an expensive mistake for the OP.

I am on my third try with an aftermarket SSD. I had OWC install a Mercury Extreme 6G 256g SSD. It beach balled to the point that it would not boot...sent it back, they said it failed...got a new one...it failed..sent it back...they are now installed the 512..maybe it will work better. I should have it back tomorrow. I will keep this forum posted. ANYBODY have a new 15" MBP with an OWC SSD that is working properly??

Thanks,

Stewart
