Mac OS X Lion: Sound problem after unplugging my headset/headphones.

Hello all,

I have an early 2011 i5 Macbook Pro, 8GB ram, 320gb HDD, recently upgraded to Mac OS X Lion. I've been looking through the discussions, but I haven't found any other topic with my same problem, unless I missed it.

My problem is: sometimes I will leave my wireless headset (Plantronics .Audio 995H, via USB) or headphones (via audio jack) plugged in for hours at a time. Once my headset battery dies, or I just decide not to use either my headset or headphones, I will unplug it. When I unplug it, NO sound is coming from the built in speakers whatsoever. Also, when I plug the headset/headphones back in to see if the sound is still going to play through them, it doesn't. I have checked my sound preferences after I unplug (System Preferences > Sound) and it's on the default "Internal Speakers" but no sound is coming out. I press the volume adjust buttons on my keyboard, and they work but still no sound.

This DID NOT happen when I had Snow Leopard..

The only way I can get my sound back is by rebooting. Right when I click restart, all the volume adjust sounds, Skype IM sounds play RIGHT before it reboots. I have done PRAM and anything else suggested by other users in the discussions to reset hardware but nothing has worked. Does anyone else have this problem? and did you find a solution?

I figured out what was causing my sound to go out after unplugging headphones/headset. IT WAS WINE/X11. When I quit the app, the sound starts working, when I don't have it running and unplug my headset/headphones sound goes through the speakers as they are supposed to!

Do any of you guys use Wine/X11? Maybe that could be your problem too?

I had an issue where any type of file action was producing the god awful crinkle/crackle/pop sound. As it turns out, a change was somehow made in my system preferences (definitely not user initiated) whereby the sound effect output was changed to aggregate device instead of internal speakers.

To fix, simply open System Preferences, Sound, and select the Sound Effects tab. Ensure internal speakers are set as your output device in the dropdown menu.

If this isn't your issue, I wish you the best of luck in finding resolution!

SIMPLE SOLUTION....for some reason many macs get stuck and think their input source is still headphones or external speakers after the source has been removed from the computer. You will notice the headphone port still illuminated after removal of external output device(speakers, headphone, etc). Well here is a simple solution:

1. Close preferences

2. Plug in your external source(headphones, external speakers) and play some music for a few seconds.

3. Stop music.

4. Open system preferences and go to sound.

5. Remove headphones or speakers from computer (This may or may not solve the issue at this step but if not you will see headphone port still illuminated)

6. With FORCE blow into the headphone port a few times and this should do the trick.

Im not sure why this works but hopefully apple with come out with a bug fix for this

I have a MBP 2011 and had a similar issue with 10.6 which I could resolve by plugging and unplugging my headphones.

I am now on 10.7.1 and the problem is MUCH worse. I can only get sound back by holding power button to power off then sometimes also have to run "sudo killall coreaudiod" after booting.

I have also noticed that when the sound is out I also lose my USB port (closest to back). The port still supplies power but will not connect device to the OS.

I seem to have had this since upgrading to Parallels v7 - but I cannot be sure as I haven't uninstalled parallels yet.

I have had this same issue and am not sure what happened, what caused it.

My fix was to go to Preferences > Sound > Output and make sure the 'Internal Speakers' was selected. I had 3 options in the output selection box and am not sure where the other two came from. There was the one needing to be selected, 'Internal Speakers', then there was two 'Soundflower' options; a 2 channel and a 16 channel. I don't have a clue where they came from.

Selecting Internal Speakers restored my sound. Hopefully this helps someone...
