Mac OS X Lion: Sound problem after unplugging my headset/headphones.

Hello all,

I have an early 2011 i5 Macbook Pro, 8GB ram, 320gb HDD, recently upgraded to Mac OS X Lion. I've been looking through the discussions, but I haven't found any other topic with my same problem, unless I missed it.

My problem is: sometimes I will leave my wireless headset (Plantronics .Audio 995H, via USB) or headphones (via audio jack) plugged in for hours at a time. Once my headset battery dies, or I just decide not to use either my headset or headphones, I will unplug it. When I unplug it, NO sound is coming from the built in speakers whatsoever. Also, when I plug the headset/headphones back in to see if the sound is still going to play through them, it doesn't. I have checked my sound preferences after I unplug (System Preferences > Sound) and it's on the default "Internal Speakers" but no sound is coming out. I press the volume adjust buttons on my keyboard, and they work but still no sound.

This DID NOT happen when I had Snow Leopard..

The only way I can get my sound back is by rebooting. Right when I click restart, all the volume adjust sounds, Skype IM sounds play RIGHT before it reboots. I have done PRAM and anything else suggested by other users in the discussions to reset hardware but nothing has worked. Does anyone else have this problem? and did you find a solution?

I know I'm a little late at upgrading my OS but I had my resaons. haha. When I got the time to upgrade it yesterday, I thought that my system was fine until I wanted to watch something on youtube. I tried my iTunes and it had also the same problem. No Sound. and iTunes won't play the song.

Panicked. Read this. Tried the audio midi thing and BAM! Thanks a lot. Merry Christmas!

This happens on MacBook Pros to, it's a bug in mac os x. You can fix it (it stays fixed for me by:

Open "Audio Midi Setup.app"

Under source the menu on the right has bit rates, click the menu and select the last one: "2ch-32bit Float",

No clue why but it should fix it instalty, test by hitting the volume key.

I'd like to add another twist to this mystery:

I recently moved to a late 2011 MacBook Pro, i7 processor, Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b).

When using a Plantronics Calisto Bluetooth headset with UBA-100 Bluetooth adapter and Dragon Dictate 2.5.2 to dictate text there is no problem. With Sound Pref's set to Input this headset, it works fine with various applications.

However, when using this same headset with Sound Pref's and Sound Effects set to Output to this device, there is no audio through to the headset from Lion's Text to Speech utility. I do get sound from this headset with iTunes and with YouTube - haven't tried other sources - as I would expect with these Preference settings. But nothing from Text to Speech!

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed on an external hard drive. When running the 2011 MacBook Pro from this drive, the Text to Speech sound is there. So it looks to me that the problem is in Lion.

I have tried dropping the "coreaudiod" process as suggested in this thread, but with no effect. I have also tried some of the usual things such as changing Sound Pref's, restarting the OS, and unplugging, replugging, and resetting the headset. No change.

Any insight and help would be greatly appreciated.

NO SOUND AFTER HEADSET FIXEXD!

I had a startup chime so I new my speaker worked.

The sound preference pane had no internal speakers or no output device.

Every sound volume adjustment was greyed-out at max setting.

Theory: IF inserting headset plug into headphone jack kills built-in speakers, AND removing headset plug returns sound to internal speakers, THEN perhaps some kind of a physical cut out switch inside headphone jack gets stuck in off position or even in between on and off positions.

My Solution: I just 'roughly jammed' headset plug in and out headphone jack while watch sound icon in top right menu bar to accidently go black, instead of its constant greyed-out state.

Results: Worked after about 5 'roughly jamming' repetitions ! ! !

Disclaimer: If there's a weak physical aspect in jack, maybe 'roughly jamming' repetitions will break it.

GOOD LUCK, FOLKS!

sudo killall coreaudiod - also worked for me.

fyi - i have no speacial setups or gizmos running. i just had physical headphones plugged in. when i unplugged them built-in audio did not come back. in the sound control panel, it even still said "headphones" in the "type" section for internal speakers.

clearly either an OS bug, or a headphones jack problem. thanks all, good thread!

(btw, bad UX on the forum here - auto correct spelling everywhere except in this text entry box? oh apple...)
