My Mail folder is now excess of 23GB

Question

My Mail folder is now excess of 23GB

I'd like to put Apple Mail on a diet.

What would be the best way of shrinking the size of the folder "Mail?" I have religiously used Mail Steward so I have complete archive of the Mail folder.

If I archive some of my mail folders and then remove them from Mail...will that noticebly shrink the size of the Mail folder?

Any other strategies I might consider?

I think the only way is delete them because even if you archive them they still there so you no free the space..
