Good deal, Anna. Glad you found it. (I was fearful that Canon had gotten wise and changed it! I still have another account on our iMac to set up.)

If you follow Rabrack's instructions, it should work for you. Worked for me.

All good now. Scanning like a mad woman. Thanks again, Diane.

    AMAZING!

Why couldn't Cannon tell us this or, better yet, bundle it into an app?

  • reagan9000 Level 1 Level 1

I don't know if Canon's support site is different from how it was last year, but the scanner driver (in my case the 9950F but also true with the 8400F) is not available when selecting Mac OSX (not OSX 10.6, just OSX).  All that was under Mac OSX was the DelDrv file.

Instead, I went to 10.6 and downloaded the Scanner Driver there.  It appears that the same .dmg file is offered regardless of which OSX version one selects.

Once I resolved this, the installation worked like a champ.  My 9950F is scanning just like it used to.

I have to say, it's really odd that Canon would EOL this scanner for Mac users, but continue to support it on Windows.  It obviously works fine and isn't a compatibility issue. It would seem to make more sense to charge owners whatever there margin is on these devices for a software upgrade, and save the manpower/components/shipping/etc. of the new hardware plus the potential annoyed customer, as I for one will never buy a Canon scanner for my Mac again.

Thanks Rabrack a million for figuring this process out.

You're running the Canon 9950F with an OS X 10.6 driver on a Mac running OS X 10.7 (Lion)??

I don't understand how: the 10.6 driver explicitly says it won't run because Rosetta is no longer included in OS X 10.7.

  • rabrack Level 1 Level 1

The drivers for most of the newer Canon scanners, including the 8400f and the 9950f, are universal binary and therefore don't require Rosetta to run properly. The only thing that makes any sense to me is that the installer used for 10.6 (Snow Leopard) does not put all the files in the proper places for 10.7 (Lion). I could be totally wrong about this!

I do know that my 8400f functions perfectly under Lion (10.7) using the Canon scanning software and the buttons on the scanner itself. I beleive this should work for most Canon scanners, if (BIG IF here) the drivers and software are Universal Binary and NOT power PC only.

Maybe someone with more computer savy than me can find out what the file "CanoScan Toolbox 5.0 Opener" does. Following the instructions I previously listed everything started working after running this file.

    Magic maybe!

You are correct: neither the CanoScan 9950F scanner driver for OS X 10.6 nor the CanoScan Toolbox 4.9.3.4X app require require Rosetta in order to work with Lion -- at least this is the case now after I already installed the driver and Toolbox 5 for the CaonScan 9000F !

They did not work before that.

thank you very much !!!! i work try for  canon 9950 f and work the same !!!!

  • phil24 Level 1 Level 1

I will try your solution for my Lide 500F to see if the buttons will work.

But I can tell you that my scanner is working fine with Lion. You only need to install Canon software driver for Mac OX 10.5 (for me "lide500fosx11251fr")

It  work with Preview, VueScan, and IMHO should be OK for most graphic software that used Twain drivers.

    tested under 10.7.2

I used my solution for the CanoScan 9950F under Lion because I wanted to be able to use the CanoScan Toolbox as the app: from there I can directly just scan, make a pdf, copy to the printer, fax, etc. -- without having to first save or open in Preview, etc.

Thank you, Rabrack and all... Never thought I'd have this 9950F working so smoothly. After following the drill, I've got working front panel buttons, consistent connection to the scanner, and full utility with both Canoscan Toolbox and Vuescan. Magic, indeed!

So, many thanks to you all, for making this a user community that works!

  • phil24 Level 1 Level 1

Thank you again ! The "CanoScan Toolbox 4.9" is also working with my Lide 500F. I'm glad to be able to use the front panel buttons again

FYI the latest version "CanoScan Toolbox 5" is not working for me.

    Rabrack,

You made my day! Brilliant work around.  Another happy Canoscan 8400F owner

now able to continue using my workhorse scanner with Lion 10.7.3 (previously

    on Tiger 10.4.11).  Thank you!

Hi Rabrack!  You instruction are clear and helpful!  HOWEVER, when I attempted to take this step:

Next select the CanoScan 8400F drivers and software, select Mac OSX (NOT OSX 10.6, JUST OSX) and download the following DRIVER:

8400F Scanner Driver Ver. 10.2.4.1X (Mac OS X...

    File Name: 8400fosx10241en.dmg

This is the message I recieved and now I do not know where to go to get the driver!

    Drivers

No drivers are available for this selection. This operating system may not require a driver or, in the case of older operating systems, may no longer be supported.

    Any Advice?

    Thanx Much, p717

    Hi p717 -

I just tried to download the file and had no problems. Maybe their site was down for a bit?

Anyhow, here is a direct link to download the Canon 8400f driver:

    http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0900003347/04/8400fosx10241en.dmg

That's the link I captured from the Canon Web site BTW.

    Hope this helps!
