I just dropped my iPad on my foot.   No a hard drop, but when I started ot back, the volume icon is on the middle of my screen and I can't get it to go away.  Nor can I get any sound...help!

You may have done some hardware damage to the iPad.  Try a System Reset.  It cures many ills and it's easy, quick and harmless:

Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.

A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.

Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide.  Pay special attention to page 162.  Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.

Finally,  the User Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks and a less   comprehensive version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark.

In addition to Philly's advice - make sure that you didn't move the volume rocker on the iPad as well. Adjust the rocker up and down to see of you get sound after you reset the device.

I tried the reset, but no luck.  I'll download the manual.  Thanks for your help.

I've seen other threads about the volume icon getting "stuck" on the screen but the only thing I can find with a search is to try plugging and unplugging earphones into the iPad and see if the icon disappers.
