Cannot share to iMovie from the Quicktime x player. I get a pop up message that says "iMovie has not been set up".

I get a pop-up window when I try to share a movie with imovie "iMovie has not been set up". I have trashed the imovie plist and repaired permissions, I restarted imovie to see if that helps but to no avail. It is not a major issue but it would be nice to have that option seeing as I will be using imovie more frequently since Avidemux does not work on lion. All the other share options seem to function so I am a bit stumped as to why this option is not working.

Thank you for your time.

Have any of you actually opened/used iMovie yet? It appears the shared file is temporarily stored in an "iMovie Drop Box" which is placed in an "iMovie Events" folder either in the "Music" folder of the current user's account on the boot drive or placed in an "iMovie Events" folder at the root level of a non-booted hard drive. It is likely that if QT X can't find/can't see any "iMovie Events" folder, it will issue the "not set up" modal message you are seeing.

When working correctly, the QT X "iMovie" shared file is placed in the "iMoviie Drop Box" folder (even if it has to create a new folder initially) where it sits until you next open iMovie. When iMovie opens, it scans all available "iMovie Events" folders and if it detects anything in the drop box, will ask you if you want to import them. During import, the files are simply moverd from the drop box to the named_Event folder you specify. Be advised that if you delete the drop box from the "iMovie Events" folder, you may later get a different modal message telling you the system cannot find the "iMovie Drop Box" the next time you try to share a QT X file to iMovie.

I'm having a similar problem but for some reason this fix hasn't helped. I opened up my Movies folder and saw that there was no "iMovie Drop Box" or "iMovie Events" folders in it. I created both folders and then went back to Quicktime and tried the Share>iTunes function again but still get the "iMovie has not been set up" response. This is after opening up iMovie. Perhaps I am missing a step somewhere?

I have the exact same problem.

I am using a Macbook Air i5 with 4GB RAM and running 10.7.2. I did a screen recording at about 20mb in size and tried to share with iMovie, to do voice over and cuts. I can export it in any other way (YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, etc.), but not to iMovie, because of that error. I have done a project in iMovie before, so all associated folders should be created already.

Anyone have any new ideas on this?

I have exported to a .m4v file format from Quicktime then imported to iMovie successfully, however, that's not how it's supposed to work 🙂

I am having the same issue and have been using the workaround of simply exporting the movie from QTX and then opening in iMovie, but that doesn't really address the original question. I checked Jon's recommendation I do have a ~/Movies/iMovie Events/iMovie Drop Box folder. Does anyone have a response for the original question about how to get this functionality working inside QuickTime X?

Here's the fix: Close Quicktime and iMovie first.

Goto Finder/Movies/iMovie Events

Rename to:

Finder/Movies/iMovie Events_bk

Next open iMovie and navigate to File/Import/Movies and choose a random small or test movie. When done, next goto Finder/Movies/ and you should now see the new folders iMovie Events created with subfolders iMovie Drop Box and etc.

Go back to Quicktime and open your movie you wish to Share. Now navigate in the menu bar to Share/iMovie and the error will be gone and you should now see a format screen.

Now the dust is settled, close iMovie and goto your renamed folder and move it's contents to the appropriate folders in the new folders. Then send the renamed one to the trash. You're all done 🙂
