Shockwave Player Error msg

Since installing Lion, am getting a pop-up unrelated to what I'm doing. It starts with: "To view the movie . . . " no matter what I'm doing. I can't figure out how to comply with it. Close it and it may pester with 3 or 4 pop backs, or may go away for awhile. Someone online can make it happen by going to Safari>Preferences>Privacy. True for me, too, I discovered. How do I make it stay away?

I had this problem with Snow Leopard. As the messages disappered after I deactiveted the Shockwave Director plugin, it looks like there is actually something trying to run that plugin when you enter the Security Pane or reset Safari!

The Flash plugin on the system was up to date but the Shockwave plugin turned out to be outadated and thus contained the security holes fixed in the latest updates from adobe.

Thus I suspect a virus to be the cause of this behaviour.

OK I was able to reproduce the issue with a fresh installation of Snow Leopard and and Shockwave Player 11, 32 bit Version.

After applying the Apple system updates and installing the shockwave plugin I had Safari 5.0 with no Shockwave error dialogs - except when visiting the Shockwave Player Test page at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/, understandably. But after closing the dialog Safari was locked and I had to force close it.

The Mac OS X System Update utility then showed additional updates for Safari (Version 5.1) and Java.

After updating to Safari 5.1 I get these boxes when I go to the Privacy Pane or reset Safari.

I presume this is related to this issue from the Safari update features list

Better Privacy: A new Privacy pane in Safari preferences makes it easy to remove data that websites can leave on your system

Looks like Safari is trying to acces data stored within the shockwave plugin.

This fixed the problem for me:

- Download and install the newest version of Shockwave here http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/.

(Notice the .dmg fil says "Full 64 bit".) Since Safari and Lion now launch on 64 bit by default, the error saying to launch in 32-bit mode made sense.)

- Quit Safari and relaunch.

- No problems with the 64 bit version of Shockwave.

I don't even know what Adobe Shockwave does.

It plays media produced by Adobe Director which you can always read about here.

is there any reason not to install it on my MacBook Pro.

None that I can think of. I've had it installed for probably twenty years.

I already have Flash Player. Is this totally different?

Yes.

Will it screw up my computer in any way?

Could slow things down while you are playing something, but you probably won't have anything else going on while you are watching something.
