I just upgraded my MBP to Lion, and I wanted to install my version of Final Cut Studio 5.1. I get an error message: You can not open the application Final Cut Studio.MPKG because power PC applications are no longer supported. Is there any way to get around this error message so I can install the software on my mac?

Sorry, you cannot. The installer for FCP 5.1 is PowerPC based, and Lion doesn't have Rosetta (what Leopard and Snow Leopard had to enable installation and running of PowerPC based apps). That version of FCP is too old to run on this OS. It came out when 10.3 was released. Now we are at 10.7...
If you want to run that software, you need to revert back to the old OS.
Is there anything that can be done to get around this...such as downgrading to snow leopard and then back up to lion or manually installing final cut components? I have the same issue...
Install Rosetta from a Mac OS X 10.6 disc and you can run the FCS installer.
Apply all software updates (FCP should be at version 5.1.4) before launching any of the FCS apps.
Is there a way to install Rosetta without the disc (I don't have access to one)? I currently have Lion as my OS.
I don't even trust FCP 7 on Lion and here you are, wanting to run 5.1? Wow. Good luck!

I currently have FCS 5.1 on a MBP running 10.6 - I will be buying a new MBP soon and googling found this thread. Nick, it sounds like you have done this (installed and using FCS 5.1 on Lion) and it is working? Can you give your experiences here?
David, can you say what problems you've had with FCP 7 on Lion? I am considering moving to this setup.

There have been reports of earlier users of FCS2 and FCE 3.5 who did attempt to install Rosetta in Lion some time ago, now experiencing "unexplained" crashes and other symptoms of unstable systems, since applying updates to their Macs (updates of Lion or upgrades to Mt. Lion).

The SAFEST way to install FCS2 or FCE 3.5 into Lion is to use Pacifist, although there is also a method using Terminal explained by Jeremy Johnstone on his blog:
I had upgraded to Lion at the time, already installed FCS3 and wanted to include LiveType from my FCS2 disk set. My current Mac originally came with 10.6.7 so I used the installation DVD to include Rosetta. Everything worked and I have never had a problem with it.
I did not say that EVERYONE who installed Rosetta into Lion was reporting problems. You have been warned and if you do not want to remove Rosetta from Lion (or gosh-forbid continue to recommend that procedure), they you do so at your (or their) own peril...
