Images quality in Pages

Has anyone else had trouble getting an image in pages to display in good quality?

Placing an image at the top of a page that is about 3x2 displays very blurry, especially when viewed in iwork online. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Just today I found a way "around" the blurry image problem. I use pages to write grants and the images are dragged in from finder, then corner-drag resized to fit the size of text boxes. No matter what I tried, the images were always fuzzy (text in them as well) and they got worse when the file was exported as PDF. Over the last few YEARS I would check in here periodically to see if anyone had figured out a way to get crisp images. I make my images in Adobe Illustrator and export them, either JPEG, TIFF, BMP, no matter the resolution (even 1200 dpi), once they were dragged into the document and re-sized, they went fuzzy. I just resigned myself to understand that the images were going to be crappy.

Today, I was looking over a final version of a PDF from Pages ('08 3.03), and, to my amazement, one of the figures was crystal clear and sharp. I figured out that I had accidentally dragged the Illustrator file, and not the exported TIFF, into Pages. I went back and dragged all of the Illustrator files in, they are all sharp no matter what size I make them. I hope this helps.

Congratiulations, you have discovered the difference between bitmap images and vector images, despite using Illustrator all these years.

Your Illustrator files are vector and are being converted to pdf files in Pages. Being line drawings they stay sharp no matter how much you scale them.

Your real problem with the unsharp images is that Pages is probably converting them to low resolution 72 dpi because you have put some form of transparency on them.

This issue has been discussed here countless times.

If you notice my comment was addressed to dammittakethealias' comment.

Like I said, probably. You do know that reflections, 3D graphs and shadows all use transparency?

You don't have to set it to 72dpi it just does it in certain circumstances.

The quick solution would be to click on my blue name and send me some of the problem pages files and, I gather, the pdf files you have created from them.

Otherwise we can work our way through the possibilities.

1. What resolution are the originals?

2. What format/source are they from?

3. Have you rescaled them up, if so to what resolution?

4. How and what quality have you exported them to?

5. Have you used reduce file size?

Generally, it's the people with reading comprehension problems that reply as he did. I fully understand the difference between bitmap and vector images. Exporting to PDF, EPS, or other vector formats didn't solve the problem, there were no transparencies (even high res., flattened JPEGs from other sources would do it), and the 72 dpi was not the problem (and if the software needed it at 72, then it should convert it correctly). Aside from that, wether Pages was converting it to another form or not, the problem exists and it is a bug that ruined the document. It is supposed to be writing/publication software, not "let's spend hours in a forum so I can do something simple" software. Additionally, exporting as "best" in PDF should not have made it worse either. Did I mention I read the other (archived) threads and tried those solutions? Oh well, for you other folks, the straight .ai file is the only one that stayed. One more point, if the issue was resolved, why is this thread here? Fix the software, its an old problem.

i am just starting a family history book with lots of images and text and i have chosen pages because it's so easy to use but as i read all the above problems i wonder if i'm making the right decision. i have adobe indesign but that is a nightmare of a learning curve. anyone have a suggestion for a problem that truly is a desktop publishing easy program without all the image resolution bugs???? i agree with the last post i'm not suppose to have to spend so much time in chats to get help for a product i PAID FOR but doesn't perform the way the manufacture says. also the really sucky part is apple sales products but offer NO support for them. even when you buy apple care which i have. don't get me wrong i love my machine just hate their software and the pc versions of word products are no better on a mac. any help??? or suggesions would be greatly appreciated. if the answer is use indesign can someone give me a tip as how to start? 🙂 thanks everyone and also, what's this point system all about this is my 2 post and both in about 2 mins. of each other. thanks for all your help
