my DVD is pixellated in some parts; pls help

hi all, I've been struggling with a large project. I'm running

Platform: iMac 2.66 GHz intel core i5, 8gb memory. OS: 10.6.6

My Final Cut Express project is 1hr 52 mins and has 24 chapters. I exported to a quicktime movie and created an iDVD project. Upon the first attempt to create a disk image, I got the Multiplexing error after 2 hrs of processing. I then "deleted encoded assetts" rebooted and tried again. I got the message "your project is too large, delete some parts and try again." So I removed about 10 minutes. recreated the iDVD project again.

Again I got the Multiplexing error after 2 hrs of processing. During this time, I did do some internet surfing and I think maybe my machine simply was overloaded, so I "deleted encoded assetts" rebooted and tried again this time running NOTHING while it processed.

It finished.

Now upon watching my DVD I see pixallations in scattered parts of the movie! Have I simply asked too much with this large movie? I've created other movies that are around 1hr with no issues at all.

My iDVD settings are "NTSC , Encoding: professional quality". There are 3 choices; Professional, High, and "best performance". I'm thinking maybe I should reduce that to the next setting down which might encode less data to the disc with less chance of errors? Would that help ?

Who has experienced this and, what is your advice? Thanks so much !!

okay, nan777, I'll try to help you

first-maybe update to 10.6.8, that might help

second-yeah, I think it might be little big. the most a dvd could hold is around 2 hours. Maybe a DL

dvd might be better for this? and, this is just my opinion, do H.264 compression and High quality

for some reason, Best performance and Professional lead to overrun and the message "Your Project is too big, please reduce the size, etc"/ I've also found that when you export a project and convert with iDVD, it may double in size, so it's suggested that you have plenty of space to play with...

just a though..

okay, nan777, let me try to help you-look for something called .dvdproj which are the bits and pieces of your idvd projects. If they haven't worked out, trash them (save the original movie though)

in iDVD, go for High quality. Mind you I don't have Final Cut Express, but in iMovie, I use h.264 compression and it seems to work okay. Oh, and see if you can find iDVD prefernces. Trash them and repair permissions. Have you updated your machine to 10.6.8 as that may have fixed a few things

same with iDVD, see if you can update that as well. Ohh, and as for the chapters, I don't think iDVD likes that many chapters, but I could be wrong, Sorry, I"m a little out of my depth here

good luck

Here is an update to my situation. I think basically I just asked too much from iDVD in terms of length of project. I trimmed my FCE project down to 1hr 20 mins. Upon running iDVD it told me it was too large even at the lowest encoding setting "best". I trimmed it down to 1hr 13 minutes and now it worked without complaining.

So the lesson is... be aware of length of your movie. I've done plenty of projects around 55 mins to 1hr without any issue at all. anything over an hour might give trouble. Also, definitely check your resulting DVD on a TV when done because my first 1hr 50 min project actually did finish - but it was pixellated.

thanks for all the help.
