How can i convert .wmv or .avi to .mp4?

I bought quicktime pro thinking it would do this but I think it only converts files FROM mp4 TO other formats and not vice versa.

I have edited a bunch of home videos on a PC so that they are wmv and avi files. Now that I have an imac I would like to be able to watch them on the imac and on my appleTV. How do I convert these files?

It is standalone, which means no codecs to install, and no need to convert files. Doesn’t really make sense to have two different copies of the same thing, plus a converter program added to your computer. VLC has a basic look to it, but it is a powerful player that can play dvds and most other media types. Otherwise, you would have to install codecs for Windows Media Player to play wmv videos.
