Yes but it is third party (Vuescan) and costs about $40. I downloaded a free version and it does work. You can find it at :
Are you sure you used Vuescan with HP Scanjet 3970 runing OS Lion?
The VueScan site states:
"This scanner isn't supported on Mac OS X Lion, since HP uses a PowerPC plugin for this scanner and Rosetta isn't available with Lion."

Please confirm your setup and that i tworked.
I downloaded the free version from the website and it does work. You can check it out yourself.
I assume the $40 version also works but I have not yet bought it.
I should have added that I also have the HP drivers on my computer. I did go to your reference about 3970 from Vuescan. What it says in its entierety is :
VueScan works with the Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 3970 on Windows and Mac OS X.
You need to install an HP scanner driver to use this scanner on Windows and Mac OS X.
On Windows x64, you need to use VueScan x64 to use this scanner's transparency adapter.
This scanner isn't supported on Mac OS X Lion, since HP uses a PowerPC plugin for this scanner and Rosetta isn't available with Lion.
It does say that you need to install HP drivers. Perhaps it is the combination of Vuescan with the HP drivers that works on Lion even tough it is "not supported.
I jus tdownlaoed the trial and it faield to recognize my scanner:
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B26)
wonder how oursetup differs?
As i read this Vuescan does not work with Lio as the FAQ says one has to have Lion.

On Mac OS X prior to Lion, you need to use VueScan x32 with Rosetta. To do this:
Do you have the latest HP drivers for 3970? Did you check all you connections and is the scanner recognized on your USB port? I do not know what other differences we have. Here is my set up
iMac Intel Core Duo now on OS 10.7.1
HP Scanjet recognized on my USB Hub
Latest HP drivers for 3970 which worked well with OS 10.6 :
With 10.7.1, the scanner software will launch but the scanner does not scan
After downloading Vuescan trial software, it works.
If you don't also have HP drivers try installing then recheck Vuescan.
Well i have made some progress! I installed the HP drivers- choosing Scanjet 3970 option when i downloaded the HP drivers. ( a drop down menu choice). Vue San doses not think the scanjet is available:
"No scanners were found connected to your computer, and no raw scan files were found"
But system profiler sees the scanjet:
hp scanjet:
Product ID: 0x2305
Vendor ID: 0x03f0 (Hewlett Packard)
Version: 1.00
Serial Number: SCN3BET201D7Y
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: hewlett packard
Location ID: 0x26200000 / 2
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 2
I then opened up Readiris. and it did see the sanjet and even scanned the image but has not yet saved the image. The process seems to be hung
Update: I am now scanning images and documents with HP Scan Pro.app Version 7.4.6 and with Readiris V 11.6.3
VueScan is not recognizing the scan jet.
But at least i am now back scanning my images/docs without having to boot back into Snow Leopard!
Albert - Thanks for all your help and suggestions!
Which HP drivers did you download to get HP Scan Pro 7.4.6? Do you have a link? Thanks.
On second thought, if you could describe how you got your scanner working in Lion, possibly, step by step, that would be extremely helpful. Thanks.
Gee. not sure I can remember all the steps! It was so much a trial and error process.
I ended up with these apps installed:
VueScan ( free version) , HP Device Manager Version 1.4.7 (1.4.7), and HP Scan Pro Version 7.4.6
Copyright © 1999 - 2007,
As I recall I ran the scrubber as indicated here
I deleted all previous versions of the scanning software that came with my HP scanner 3970
Even though VueScan didn't solve the problems it may have something in it that helped.

By the way I had two different responses from HP technical telling me that my HP 3970 scanner would not work in lion. But I am happily still using my scanner in Lion!
Best wishes
