Why do my iphone headphones keep losing volume in left earbud?

I have now lost around 50-75% of the volume in the left earbud of THREE sets of standard iPhone headphones with handsfree mic etc. The latest have only lasted a month.

I see I'm not the only person to have this problem. I saw this archived post - someone with almost exactly the same problem, even down to the number of sets of headphones their phone has destroyed.

There are several other very similar stories.

Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem or prevent it happening? I can't afford to keep buying headphones, and once the left ear lets go they become practically useless...

Hi,

I also have this problem. They slowly lose their volume, I guess it is that apple just includes crappy headphones on its products. Is your phone "destroying" them??? how is that possible? I have a 3gs also and none of that happens, it doesent matter if I use them on my computer, phone or ipod they slowly sound softer until the left side almost goes off. I would suggest that you bough some headphones of another brand, and see how that goes.

Hi Andrew.

I also experienced a similar story: I own a 3G iPhone and both original Apple headphones and a more expensive model I bought after some time lost almost totally audio in the left channel. Both model do not work anymore on my other devices - iPad and MacBook. With the iPhone I now use an in-ear cheaper model, but I regret the sound quality of my second model, and the money I spent...

Take those headphones to the Apple Store and they will replace it for you for free.

But you are right, this happens a lot. I've had 3-4 of them fail on me like this. It's the way you handle your headphones. Sometimes, if you wrap them around the iPhone too tight or something, it can ruin something. I usually have a little leeway so the wire has some space before I wrap it, or I just unplug it.

Or you can also try better headphones, but >$50 headphones are rarely built to last, sorry.

As mentioned above, Apple will replace them for you; alternately, it's a 30-second repair job with a soldering iron. I would recommend picking up a set of cheap Sennheiser or Etymotics canalphones, though. The sound quality can be markedly better, and you'll save your hearing by blocking out background noise (subjectively, playing music at a listenable volume seems quieter than normal environmental noise on the subway).

Thanks all for your advice.

It does seem strange that the company would not correct such a glaring flaw - in something as fundamental as the headphones they send out with EVERY iPhone.

I believe they will only replace them for free if the phone is under warranty (mine isn't) but I will check it out,

One final question,,,

I use the hands free functions of the iPhone headphones, which is why I had been reluctant to stop using them.

Does anyone know of any good 3rd party headphones which also have the handsfree controls?

I was having this problem.. I noticed that it happed at about mile 4.. I also knoticed that once i take one out of my ear it will not stay in any longer.. I asumed it was because of sweet. So i towel dry my ear (in my ear) and Blow Really hard accross the ear bud with the lack of volume, towel dry it ... And when i put it back in the volume is back.. Untill the next mile.. when i sweet all over it again.. So my question to this is.... HOW DO I Keep the water out of my earbuds. so i can hear the music.. Because the blowing hard is not easy to do when running, and the loss of music = my loss of ambission...

WE should re post this Tital "why am I getting fat with my Ipod?" , LOL !

I have an iPod touch 4th gen... I've only had it for 2 months and the the left earpiece on my stock headphones has already had the same issue where the bass disappears 😟 My 2 year old bottom of the line Phillips earphones that I've abused have absolutely no problems with sound quality at all... I'm resorting to them again and I'm taking my apple headphones back to the store this weekend 😟

well i also faced this issue with iPhone 4S the headphone's last like a month or so two time's but i dont blame the headphone's for that i use to hear loud music with custom equlaizer settings so sometime's the bass/treble is much high the good solution would be to buy cutom third party headphone's i dont recommend them because i alway's use Apple branded accessories but for your problem it's the best solution.
