You have your answer, then. The iPhone will not charge with the computer is asleep (I assume that you know it isn't charging?) There is nothing you can do. You cannot force the ports to supply power when asleep. Some iDevices can charge when the computer is asleep. Perhaps the power needed for the iPhone requires the computer be awake. Or, you can use a separate wall outlet charger.

OK, for some of you that may have the same problem or question as me. I have been testing my MAC Book Pro for ways to continue to power the usb while laptop in standby or off. I have found the following thing to work or not work.

1. The laptop doesn't send any power to your USB's when it is powered off reguardless if it is plugged in or not.

2. If laptop is put in standby no power is sent to USB's unless the power cord is plugged in on the laptop. So once again if you plug your laptop in and then put it in standby it does still send power to the USB's when requested.

So the bottom line is, On my last laptop (toshiba) I was given an option to go into system preference and make a change that allowed my laptop to continue to send power to USB's when requested while in standby or powered off. I was hoping I could do the same thing with my new smokin Mac Book Pro but I haven't found that kind of option in the MAC.

You can plug the notebook into the power adapter. It seems silly to charge the iPhone (in my opinion) from a notebook running off it's own battery. If you do not have power available thenit seems this is you only option to kee the iphone alive. You could also consider one of those portable batteries made just to charge mobile devices.

When I travel, i don't have a 120/240v power point to charge laptop etc. And the laptop has a huge battery, fully capable of charging 100 other phones, but not iPhone for some wisdom of Apple.

I think perhaps getting an external USB battery, charging it, then using it to charge my iPhone might be an answer, BUT ONLY IF the iPhone will charge from an external battery. Who knows?
