Safari won't force quit.

I was just using my Mac and had a few tabs open. I noticed when I wanted to close a few tabs- there was no "x" to do so? I went and tried to "quit Safari" and that option is no longer highlighted?

I also can't "force quit"?

When I try and "restart" it tells me the App Safari will not allow it.

I didn't do any updates recently.

Thanks for your help : )

I had exactly the same experience with Safari just yesterday. The tabs suddenly didn't have an "x" available to close any of them individually, and so I had to do it using the menu command. Then, I tried to quit out of Safari altogether, and the Quit and the Force Quit were both grayed-out. I tried quitting from the taskbar at the bottom, but clicking on quit there had no effect. I also tried command-Q and this didn't work. I tried to restart the computer; however it wouldn't allow me to because it said Safari needed to be closed first. Finally, I found another quit command under the Apple icon, and that ultimately allowed me to force-quit Safari.

I was running iPhoto at the same time, and I still have Snow Leopard. I did update recently with all the latest Apple software updates. It seems like there might be a bug in the newest release of Safari.

I am having another problem from a Safari update I did last week. I get this msg every time I open Safari....
"We’re sorry, but the Safari browser version you are currently using does not support the community toolbar"

My Google toolbar is fine, but I used to have a "Swagbucks" toolbar that I used to earn points for searches. Safari will no longer allow me to have it. (Firefox will though)

I called Apple and they said there was nothing they can so- Swagbucks will need to update it on their end?

When I go to "toolbars" my Swagbucks toolbar does not even show up- actually no toolbars show up- so I am not sure what Safari is seeing. I figured if I could delete the Swagbucks toolbar- that will at least stop the msg from appearing.

I never had problems with updates before, but like you said, maybe there is a bug in this new update.

Why not respond to a 7 month old thread? I was not aware of an expiration date. What exactly is your time limit on threads?

If she is having exactly the same issue, what on earth is wrong with filing it under this thread?

If you know an answer, post it. If not, consider not posting. Your response was not helpful and led off in some vague direction. Consider changing your name from hatter to hater; it's more fitting.

So it is Feb 2015 and I am having this same issue. Safari (8.0.3) freezes and will not force quit. It freezes my whole Mac Pro. I cannot switch to another app by any means, and I cannot click the Apple menu in the upper left to select force quit. I cannot use the force quit key combination. It freezes the entire Mac (except the cursor) - all open apps, documents, etc. All unsaved data was lost when I accepted that holding down the power key was the only alternative. So it is a serious problem.

This thread, old as it is, comes up high in Google. So, if someone has the answer, post it here. This is where those with this issue will find the answer.

Safari top sites even in Snow Leopard are refreshed to current status of the page.

If you have gone into any RSS sites and those were added to top sites - those will be refreshed.

Some scenario adds tops sites on its own - so as long as you use safari - be sure to review top sites and delete any that you don't want as same.

Clear the safari cache/web site data as often as you want - that includes editing cookies.

Safari may not end or take up too much memory while doing its refresh -- if you wonder where some cookies come from - top site refresh.
