This is crazy and I'm hoping it's something simple. I have ipods, iphone, iMac. No problems with plugging in the cord to charge. I just got a new iPad2, hurried home all excited and I can't get the cord to plug into it to charge it! Is there some secret that is different with this than with other Mac products? It's the cord that came with it but it just will not go in!
Are you using the 10 W Wall Charging plug suppled with your iPad? iPad requires a higher charge than what is usually available from a USB port.......

dancetoday07, I also had that problem. I have the 1st & 2nd iPad, two 3rd gen iPods and one 2nd gen iPod. I have a sync/charge cable that does not fit either of them. My advice is use one of the other cables. It's crazy, I know. I had that problem when I tried to use the cable that came with my iPad 2.
Wow, ok, this is weird. I was told in Best Buy that iPads can NOT use the same USB etc. as iPhones because they need more power to charge, but that you can sync them with the same cords. But I was trying just to charge it so I was trying to use the cable etc. that CAME WITH THE iPAD. It will not fit. So now after reading the above post I went to try both cords, the one that goes to the computer and the one I just have in the wall for my iPhone and iPod. They work!! Now whether they will charge or not, I don't know. But I think I'll be back at Best Buy tomorrow asking for another cord/plug to replace the one that came with it. What's with that? Apple put the wrong ones in with iPad2? Odd.
It is plugged into my computer right now and iTunes recognized it but it says "not charging." 😕
It won't charge in your computer. Well, it will but it might take days. USB ports are not powerful enough to charge and iPad. You need to use the supplied 10W charging cable and plug it into a wall outlet to charge your iPad.
That's the problem. See above, what I wrote originally. The cable that came with the iPad does not fit it! I'm not an inexperienced user. I have had Macs all my life, have had several iPods and two iPhones. So I know how to plug in cables and charge and sync things. But the one that came with it simply does not fit. The iPhone cable does fit. I will take it back to BestBuy tomorrow I guess and see what they say. This is crazy!
If it's the USB cable that won't fit, until you get it replaced, take the USB cable from your iPhone and plug it into the 10W charger on one end, then the 30 pin connector to your iPad and it should work. It's the charger that makes iPad charge. As long as you have a USB that works, it should be fine.
Coincidentally, Best Buy is where I purchased mine from as well. It was new, in the box, never registered but the cord just didn't fit. , never opened.
Ok, rbry, that worked. Luckily, it was mostly charged when I brought it home, so I got to play around with it a little. Now, four hours after getting home, it is finally charging with one of my iphone cables and the charger that came with it. I will go back to Best Buy tomorrow. I would think it would be Apple's fault, not Best Buys, they don't open the boxes, but who knows. Maybe they got a bad batch of cables.
Glad you were able to get it charged. You are correct, it is Apple's fault the cable is defective. Either Apple or Best Buy would replace it though......
My iPad2 is now doing this after 2 months of charging just fine in the USB port of my computer. It is recognized in iTunes but "not charging." But it worked last week and for the past two months.. what's going on??
It does charge at the computer but very slowly. It charges faster when plugged into a regular electric outlet. It sounds like nothing is different for you but you are just getting the notice now and you weren't before. I get the notice that it isn't charging, but if I leave it at the computer long enough, it does charge.
