Using Canon LBP7200Cdn (networked) with Lion

After upgrading to Lion, I deleted the printer, downloaded Canon's new driver (3.36), uninstalled previous drivers, installed 3.36, and registered the printer. During registration I got the error message: "Unable to verify the printer on your network."

As instructions said, I continued, printer was created. However, no program I've tried (Preview, Word, browsers) will print. I always get the error message "/Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCAPT/Bins/capdftopdl failed".

I've tried several times, rebooted & tried again, etc. Can anybody (PAHU?) see where I might be missing something?

One step that you may have missed is stopping the Canon CAPT backgrounder service. If you had a previous version of the CAPT driver on 10.6 and then installed Lion, the old service will still have been registered and possibly running and causing this error.

So delete the current LBP7200 in Print & Fax.

Trash the CUPSCAPT folder in /Library/Printers/Canon

Trash the file 'jp.co.canon.CUPSCAPT.BG.plist' located in /Library/LaunchAgents

Force quit the 'Canon CAPT Backgrounder' service via Activity Monitor

Restart the Mac

Open Disk Utility and run repair disk permissions on the Lion partition

Then install the v3.36 CAPT driver again and add the network printer.

Note that John's suggestion for using the Generic PPD will work providing your LBP7200 supports Postscript. In Australia this model has Postscript as a standard fitting. But in helping others on this forum from other regions, I've found that Postscript and PCL are not standard inclusions for the LBP7200 in all regions. So the selection of the Generic PS or Generic PCL may not work with your LBP7200.

Still no luck. I tried both the PCL and PS generic drivers; mine must be one of the ones that doesn't support it. (It's either UK or Europe; I'm in Prague but I think we bought the printer in Germany.)

Also got the same result after stopping the backgrounder service. The only thing I might not have done correctly (that I know of!) is running repair disk permissions. Is there a step to finish that process? Once it was done I just closed Disk Utility.

I'm going to try installing thru USB so I can at least print something, but I certainly welcome any more suggestions. Thanks for your help guys.

The alarm lamp is a concern. Did the same happen when the printer was connected via the network?

I don't think the USB connection gives you access to the internal web page of the printer that can provide more information about the error, rather than just an illuminated LED. So if you connect the printer back to your network and then open Safari and type the IP address of the printer as the URL, this will connect to the internal web page and show what the issue is.

The error messages were just the standard "printer cartridges whose quality cannot be guaranteed..." ones, and when I opened & closed the toner drawer they went away.

So I don't know what I'm talking about, but it seems like if I can get to the printer's internal web page (and login as admin) then something's right. Yet I still can't print. Are those totally unrelated?

Having the ability to get to the internal web page does show that there is a working connection between the printer and the Mac. But there is some other underlying issue present that is stopping the Mac from printing that is not network related, proved also by the fact that when connected via USB you were unable to print.

This most recent message is most likely due to the changes that were made to Lion's printing system. These changes were introduced with 10.6.8 and a number of users found that after that update they were no longer able to print due to machine status messages such as toner and drums needing replacement. But if the machine was reporting a problem then you should be able to view this via the Remote UI page (the printers internal web page). So if you do open this web page does the printer show the same service call error?

The status of the printer and subsequent warning message will be determined and generated by the 'CAPT Statusmonitor for Macintosh' utility. I am curious to see what it is showing on Lion compared to Snow Leopard. So the following details the procedure for opening the utility on both Lion and SL.

Open Print & Fax and select the LBP7200.

Open Options & Supplies and select the Utility tab. Then click Open Printer Utility.

This opens the CAPT Statusmonitor utility. In the menubar of this utility you will see the Options menu. Opne this menu and then select Consumables/Counters. Does the Lion connection show the same as the Snow Leopard?

Still in this utility there is another setting which we can disable to see if that helps to get Lion printing. So still in the 'CAPT Statusmonitor for Macintosh' utility press the Options menu again but this time select Device Settings then Warning Display Settings. In the new window disable the 'Display Toner Cartridge Replacement Notice' checkbox and then press OK. You will then need to power the LBP off for ten seconds and then back on for the setting to take effect. Now try printing from Lion again.

Okay, while working on an LBP5050n issue for another post I noticed something different about his setup compared to mine. So can you open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and locate the Printers entry in the left column. With this selected the top right pane will show all the printers you have installed. If you can select the LBP7200 the bottom right pane will show information about the printer. Can you copy that information and paste it back here please.
