Can't Delete or Move Mail for Exchange Account

I am using Mail to connect to my work e-mail. It's an Exchange account. Every time I try to move an e-mail I get: "messages could not be moved to the mailbox XXX". If I try and delete an e-mail message I get "messages could not be moved to the mailbox Trash". If I click on the question mark on the pop-up dialog, I get :

The selected topic is currently unavailable.

The topic you were trying to view could not be found.

The lack of detailed error message doesn't allow me to send a detailed query to our IT support team. I don't see how they can help me when I have no details about the error.

I didn't get this error before I upgraded to Lion. Anyone having similar problems? Is there a way to get better error messages?

It's actually Mailbox -> Rebuild. And thanks! It worked perfectly. I found that the messages had, in fact, been moved to other folders on the server, but they were showing copies in the Inbox still. So when I saw those copies, I assumed they were the original messages and tried to move them without success. Once I clicked "Rebuild" from the Mailbox menu, they were all gone.

I have the same problem regularly and also don't know how Mail can recover from this situation. One way I figured out is to delete the local Exchange folder when Mail is not running. If you then start Mail again it automatically rereads your whole mailbox from the server. But only remove the Exchange mailbox if you have any others 😉.

You can find it at <user>/Library/Mail/

Actually, I have a folder V2 there and my exchange folder is inside this one.

Hope that helps for a quick fix.

Nevertheless, I'm also interested in a "user friendly" solution. It seems that Mail struggles at some points and then dos not resync with the exchange server again. Don't know why, because I thought that the Exchange server is the leading instance for that mailbox. By the way, I had this problem also with Snow Leopard.

I'm having the same problem with Lion (also same problem with Snow Leopard before I upgraded to Lion). I've had 2 or 3 Genius Bar appointments regarding the issue but still no solution. If anyone has found a solution - please post.

As an alternative, I've tried to find a setting which will allow me to limit the number of emails I download in Mail from the Exchange server but I do not see that as an option.

I've read through a TON of different forums about this very issue, and the Mailbox -> Rebuild solution is what worked for me. I'm using Mail to connect to our work Exchange server and could not delete or move any emails, and wasn't getting any error message. If I deleted an email, it would go away, only to come right back the next time Mail synced with Exchange.

Thanks ci1031 !

Can anyone here do a quick test, can you go "offline" then try to delete some messages, I think that you will find that when you come back on-line this issue will re-occur. Perhaps it can be cleared again with the rebuild.

I'm aksing because I've had this issue on and off for the last few months, not happy at all (had to go back to Outlook 2011 and it's horrible look and feel).
