How portable is the 15" Macbook Pro?

I got a 15" in 2010. I never took it to lessons really, I just used a pen and paper and then did whatever I needed to on the computer when I got back. I take it places occasionally, and it's not really an issue. I put it in my bag and carry it around. The screen size is just right for me, and I needed the power because I do video editing on my course which is why I chose it over the 13" model.

If you do want portability and money isn't an issue, I would suggest a MacBook Air 13". The 15" MBP is fine for portability in my opinion anyway.

As Nathan mentioned, the MBA is the ultimate in portability. However, you also mentioned that you listen to music... so, if you still use music CDs/movies on DVD you would probably want the MBP. I find that the 13.3" screen is perfect for me. Also I find the weight of the 13 manageable what with books, etc., that I'm carrying around in my pack. And if money is not a concern, invest in AppleCare.

However, I love the size of the 15" but I am afraid that it wont be very portable.

All of Apple's notebooks are portable. All you got to do is carry it around in a protective computer bag.

Its alright, it is certanly a word of difference from the 13 inch. But as long as you a have a nice bag for it,instead of just carrying it in your hand.

Two years ago I was in the same situation as you. I think I may have actually posted a similar question. Anyway, as for your first question: it really depends on the class. Some classes it's easier to take notes with the laptop, others it's impossible. Other classes are just plain boring and that's when your computer really comes in handy. As for portability, the 13" is really nice. Never did have or really try the 15" but I am very happy with my 13" purchase. I was wondering about the screen being small too, but it hasn't been an issue at all. Any laptops bigger almost feels too big at first now. I would suggest the 13" MBP for anyone going to college. Also, it is cheaper to get the high-end 13" than the low-end 15", so I would choose that route if money isn't an issue for you.

This is exactly how I use my MacBook Pro. 90% of the time it's on my desk and then the other 10% it's out with me. I carry it around in my backpack and it isn't an issue. It is a bit weighty, certainly more so than the 13" but it's nothing that makes it impossibly portable. If you want to really know, I would suggest going to an Apple Store or a computer shop near you that stocks these machines, then you can handle them yourself and be able to feel their weight and see which is best for you. If you plan to watch a lot of films then the 15" is better because of its larger screen size, but my friend has the 13" and it really isn't bad to use. At the end of the day it's down to your needs and what you like the most; I prefer the 15" and its power suited my needs more than the 13", but the 13" is also a good machine.

Don't forget, if you buy the 13" and you don't like it, you can always return it to Apple and they'll give you your money back, providing it's not damaged, but they will charge you a restocking fee, but you can use the money you get back and put it towards buying a 15" if you decided you wanted that one instead.
