Lion + Firefox 5.0.1 = major crash

Hi,

After having searched the web, i decided to look for help from here. The issue is with Lion and FF 5.0.1, which tends to cause a major crash (or freeze) at random points of time. It freezes up the whole computer in such way, that it becomes totaly unresponding: no way of force quitting etc. The only way to restart the computer is to hold down the power button..

Other weird remarks, that i have noticed - after one restart Lion wanted to set itself up again, and it seems to do a lot of reindexing..

I would glad to provide a crash report of some kind, but there seems to be none.

I know that it would be perhaps easier to use Safari (which seems to work just fine, btw) but there are some specific reasons for using FF.

Has anybody encountered the same issue?

Exact same issue here - 17" 2009 MBP with fresh installation of Lion and Firefox 5.0.1. Called Apple and they think it's a Firefox-only problem and recommend using Safari until Firefox issues an update/fix.

Happening to me, too on a new 2011 iMac with Lion and with 16GB of RAM. It just seems to slow down and then stop working. Able to force quit from the dock and a restart gets everything back to normal. Guess we'll see a Firefox update?

Try downloading a fresh copy of FF, run the installer and replace.

You can start FF in a SAFE MODE by launching holding the option key, if it works in this environment- dis able all extentions that may be interferrring.

i personally had to go back to SL. ok, if it were my macbook, i would have just used safari but since it is my wife's... kinda' sad though - all the possibilities that lion had for a multi-touch trackpad users going to waste.

on SL everything seems to work ok for now.. so it was a clash between Lion & FF.

It is surprising. Typically disabling extensions and add-ons there is nothing left to interfere on SafeMode to launch effectively. Trouble shooting from there is a process of elimination.

This has not been a general issue across the board.

Lion and Firefox 5.0.1 are giving no problem at all here. As Leroy suggests, I would disable anything that is not vanilla Firefox, see if it runs OK, then add back the extensions you feel you need one at a time. If it breaks, then you have probably identified the problem.
