Can I use X264 instead of H264

Short version:

Can I get HandBrake quality X264, compatible with Apple devices, from FCPX?

I have converted a few 720P mkv files using HandBrake, and the quality is amazing at relatively low bitrates. Exporting projects from FCPX (Directly or via compressor) gives me poor results at very high bitrates.

Is there any way for me to use one of the X264 QT plug-ins to get the same great result from FCPX/Compressor and still retain compatibility with Apple devices like AppleTV/iPhone/iPad?

Here is an URL for a x264 plug-in:

I've been using this plug-in for years. It has a faster compression time compared to Quicktimes h.264 and better quality. There are presets... I try the fastest compression preset on a video that is 1 hour and 30 minutes and it took just over 8 minutes to compress, good enough for the iPad.

There are doucuments for reading... It might take some time to get up to speed using this plug-in but it worth it. Google 'x264' for more info.
