Q: Pan Stutter on Set-Top DVD but not on Computer (Anamorphic vs 4:3)

I received AJA KiPro footage, from a client's live mutli-switch program, at 720x486.  The client asked overlay a bug on the footage and author the content onto DVD which I did — leaving the footage at 720x486. The workflow was simple: import into FCP, make timelines based on the footage's specs, drop in the bug, export with timeline's setting, and compress using Compressor's stock 90-minute MPEG-2 setting with automatic pass-thru. The new .m2v files were important into DVDSP Pro and DVDs were authored. These DVD looks the best however the client felt the image was stretched since they were 4:3.

Later, the client told me the content was shot anamorphic. So, edited the FCP project to make the footage files anamophic. I then made new timelines based on the footage settings, dropped in the bug, and output new exports using the timeline's setting. Again, I compressed using Compressor's stock MPEG setting and important into DVDSP. DVDSP recognized they were 16:9 and I authored new DVDs.

So the new 16:9 DVDs look great when played on a computer but when they're played on my set-top, Sony DVD player I see a bunch of pan stutter whenever the cameras pan. Is there something in my workflow I'm not doing right?

Not sure exactly what's going on but you may have a field order problem.  DVD video is 720 x480 not 486 so the material needs to be cropped, either 4 at the top and 2 at the bottom or 2 at the top and 4 at the bottom.  If it's cropped by 3 lines on the top and bottom, the field oreder will be reversed.

Not sure if compressor will do this cropping correctly automatically or whether you should edit in fcp in a 720x480 sequence cropping the material as described above, or using the geometry settings in the compressor preset to crop correctly.

Thanks for the help. Turns out it was a field order issue. Footage was set to Lower First and the timeline didn't match.
