Q: iPhone 4 stuck in headphone mode?

Hey, I've been reading up on this problem, but haven't really seen a fix yet...

My iPhone 4 is stuck in headphone mode (says "Headphone (Ringer)" when adjusting the volume, can't hear through the regular earpiece on phone calls, etc.)  I have literally tried everything that I've seen, blowing in the jack, compressed air, sucking through it, and all that.  That bad thing is, I just took my old iPhone 4 last Friday (July 22nd) for the exact same problem.  They were nice enough to trade out the phone, as I was just out of warranty, but it's the exact same problem.

Come on....really?  Is there anything else that can be done?

Thanks Troy! I forgot that I've had to do this in the past. Worked immediately and I collated my iTunes and lowered the volume (+ button currently stuck), then just used the iTunes volume slide button on screen then hit play and VOILA! Works like a charm.

Yes, I read from somewhere that rather than using the hairdryer (which is a common first option for many), that we should use the vacuum cleaner instead. Because depending on where you are, and which season you're in, warm or hot air from the hairdryer can actually create condensation when it cools, making it worse.

I just switched on my vacuum cleaner to max mode and place it over the jack pin hole of my iPhone 4S. While letting it suck in whatever debris or water droplets, I kept pressing the volume button on the side of the phone to check if it had switched back to Ringer from Headphones. After only about about 30secs to a min. the Headphone sign was gone and came back to Ringer when I pressed the volume buttons at the side.

This also applies to all brands of phones when they drop into the pool /wash basin/toilet bowl etc.. and you have to open up the phone. Do not use the hairdryer on the exposed micro chip boards. Use the sucker in the family.

Thanks so much!  I tried many, many suggestions, but flipping my phone upside down (with a shake or two) finally "fixed" my iphone 4S–took it out earbud mode all afternoon and tonight.  It's staying upside down forever!!

Thank you! My phone fell onto the snow for a split second and then was stuck in headphone mode. Hair dryer for two minutes saved it!

Try sucking in air through the headphone jack, speaker, and charging port. Also try blowing in the headphone jack, speaker, and charging port. That's what worked for me.

first, thanks for all the great ideas and contributions. I too had this problem for a few days and after blowing, cotton buds and sucking this is what worked for me:

    1. turn phone off

    2. insert small 'jewellers' screwdriver and wiggled it around and turn it in headphone socket

    3. placed vacuum cleaner (using a thin nozzle attachment) and sucked at maximum pressure (make sure tight seal against phone edge - remove case)

    4. turned phone on - and the ringer returned - no longer in headphone mode!

by the way, in the meantime, I took it to a GSM repair shop who said the only option was a new audio socket. Fortunately there was no parts in stock and so I delayed the repair, and the vacuum cleaner solved it! Saved me 50 euro...
