my ipod is charged but it still has a sad face on it...??

i've had my ipod for a year now and it just randomly stopped working. it shows a picture of an ipod with a sad face and the support website address when i try to turn it on. after a while it started to show that it was out of batteries. so i tried charging it but it still shows the sad face. what should i do? is it fixable or should i bring it to a store?
