Mac OX X Lion freeze after wake-up

Hello,

I've installed Lion for one week. Runs fine except when waking up from "sleep" mode. (NL: sluimer) I can't determine what causes this behaviour. Usually Chrome, Mail (2nd desktop) and Parallels Desktop are running.

Also I had once a freeze when the machine was unused for 15min. Activating resulted in a freeze. Button on the back used for off and on.

Please help me solving this issue.

Hi,

I read your post, we have different issues.

As I understand you are experiencing a 5 sec hang? if so, I guess it is not a bug but just the time it takes your system to wake up and get going. In any case try booting up, close any running programs and put your device to sleep. if it still happens it is most definitely normal system operation.

Good luck!

Just to throw in my two-cents, as I had read this and other threads trying to solve this issue myself. For me, it came down to another program, Jungle Disk, which I use for backup. After a couple of days up time, my wireless will start to spool when the computer comes out of sleep. The moment I type:

sudo killall -9 JungleDiskService

It connects.

I doubt this will help everyone, but just in case...

Cautiously I think I have found the problem for my particular set up.

I was using an elderly hub from my previous mac system with independent power supply USB1 with the new imac. I have bought a new one USB2 and the problem has gone as of the last two days. AppleCare didn't ask me about hubs and as it looked as if it was working I hadn't thought it was part of the problem...

It is worth checking that all your hardware connected to your mac is uptodate if nothing else seems to be working. I have my external hard drive running time machine ok now, I have reinstalled Flash Player and cross fingers it looks ok, if the problem reappears I will be back and let you know.

Edit : I have also turned off Wifi on the mac in the menubar as it doesn't need to be on as well to connect to the net as I am connected via ethernet and the mac was always searching for new networks when it didn't need to do that and if it is on, it goes to sleep and then wakes up again, you can hear it. I am fairly bewildered by networks and thought it had to be on for my partner to connect his mac in the other room, but he picks up the signal from the airport extreme. There I have confessed all my stupidity for you !

I am not an expert user but I cautiously think I have fixed the problem on my early 2008 24" iMac. It would freeze from sleep every day. Sometimes I would get the log in page when I hit a key to exit sleep mode, only for it to freeze up after about 5 minutes worth of use (beachball). At other times I would simply get a black screen when I hit a key to exit sleep and no log in page at all. Rebooting by holding the power button was the only way to get the machine working and the constant start up sound at 6am must have been annoying the neighbours.

So, one time when I was able to get a small amount of use before the inevitable crash I noticed on the top left of the screen (the part that shows the name of the app you are in, e.g. Safari, Finder etc.) a programme I'd never heard of was running and it froze when it was executing whatever it was doing. I'm sorry but I never noted the name. Anyway, I looked it up and it was associated with Silverlight and so using AppCleaner I got rid of all things Silverlight. Hey presto, no more crashing. This was 2 weeks ago - so far so good.

I think Silverlight may have been installed as part of my MS Office installation but I can still use Word, Excel etc after deleting Silverlight and that is all I really use it for so I'm happy to be without it (as far as I know). I hope this works for others.

Frankly, I have loved macs since I switched over to them a few years ago. Yet over time as they have gotten a larger piece of the market, quality has been going down in my opinion. Lion looks great and all, and it has some interesting and nice concepts, but it is definitely not an OS that I would say "Just works". I count these hanging sessions as crashes since there no choice but to force your system to shut down and restart. It has happened enough times for me to say that it isn't a lot more stable than windows 7 :-(. There are other OS issues (e.g. VERY slow USB transfers), but that is not what this thread is about. I would downgrade back down to snow leopard since it definitely just worked, but i can't bother to spend they full day it would take.

Hello All,

My situation appears to be very similar. I have an early 2009 24" iMac that was upgraded to 8GB RAM. I have been late to the Lion upgrade as I thought I'd be good with the Snow Leopard upgrade. I added an Apple wireless keyboard and then the Apple Magic Mouse and later still a 3rd party bluetooth number pad. I have the iMac set to sleep and never had a problem with Leopard or Snow Leopard. After an hour or two hours or one or two days or longer I could come back to the iMac, tap a key or mouse click and all was good again. This was the situation since the beginning before the Snow Leopard upgrade and even after that.

In mid March 2012 I decided to pay for the Lion upgrade. The install seemed to go smooth and things were okay for a few days. Then I noticed I was not able to login and thought the iMac was powering down so I would use the power button and carried on. I soon realized the problem is when I leave the iMac for more than two hours it does not respond to wireless mouse or keyboard. I had to retrieve the USB mouse and keyboard to wake the iMac. After waking the iMac and logging in I noticed the system would eventually stop responding and I had to resort to an power button restart. At present I have to wake the iMac with USB keyboard and mouse and immediatly Restart. This allows normal functionality until I leave which is a daily occurance.

I have been on the telephone with Apple Support constantly and even had an appointment at the Genius Bar. Of course everything works okay when I am talking to Apple Support as they can't stay on the phone for two hours or longer.

I have the following devices connected:

Apple Wireless Keyboard (BT)

Apple Magic Mouse (BT)

LMP Bluetooth Keypad (BT)

LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB (FW 800)

Apple Keyboard & Mouse (USB) - for sleep recovery/reboot

Canon Pixma MX700 (USB)

Tardis Hub (USB) non powered, both variations currently disconnected did not impact sleep mode problem

I have the following software installed:
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion (installed fresh from USB Key)

iWork 09

iLife 09

iTunes 10

iBank 4.3.3

Parallels 7.0

Also of note:
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz

8GB RAM 1066MHz (after market upgrade from westworld)

1.0TB HDD 7200 RPM

NVidia GForce GT130

The original USB keyboard and mouse are now on my desk full time until I am satisfied the problem is resolved.

My problem re-appeared with the freeze and the cursor redrawing screen issue recently.

Today...

I have talked to Apple Support who hope that this will fix it http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4135?viewlocale=en_US

Basically having the Display sleep set to a longer period (in Energy Saver preference panel) than the time set for require password for sleep and screen saver setting (in Security and Privacy preference panel)

He also recommended leaving the

'Put the hard disk to sleep where possible' option unchecked in the Energy Saver preference panel.

Apple Support said this problem affected a small no of macs and the latest update plus these settings should solve it. I will come back if it doesn't and let you know. Kind regards

Didn't notice if anyone else brought this up or not... but how many of you with this issue have non-Apple memory in your iMac (or other Mac)?

Here's my scenario:

Long time Winduhs and Linux user. First Mac ever (and I've used computers since the Kaypro days). Geek level? Medium.

Mid-2011 iMac. Almost upon buying it I was given (for Christmas) 16g (4 4gig sticks) of memory (Patriot, which has a good rep as far as I can tell). I put it in. No complaint from iMac. I went on about my business. Then the random lock-ups, often on returning from sleep but also randomly when running itunes or some other app... or running nothing at all. Total freeze. Hard reset (button on back) my only options.

Addt'l complications? Well, my computer was purchased in late 2011 as a refurb (still under warranty as I write). It had Snow Leopard on it. Wish I'd have left it there. Didn't. Installed Lion. That's really when I ran into the problems. (Don't recall Snow Leopard locking up at all.... though must also note that it may have been gone before I put that new memory in; wish I'd tracked the timeline here more carefully.)

Few months back, frustrated, I called Apple. They took me through the usual resetting of PRAM (is that the right term?) and so forth. This error doesn't show up right away, so I had no idea if it was fixed or not.

It wasn't.

I took it next to Genius Bar -- after putting the Apple memory back in just so that wouldn't be a point of contention -- and they wiped the drive (I'd backed up) and reinstalled Lion. The computer seemed to be okay... I ran it without much third party software for a few days and all seemed well.

Put software back on. Still seemed okay.

Then I put the memory back in. And now... the ghosts are back, haunting my machine. Random lock-ups from sleep mode and so on.

SOOO... I theorize that the Patriot memory may not work in this particular model as well as it ought.

I've replaced my original Apple memory into the machine and we'll see. I like to load up a virtual box windows 7 session, the Mac version of MS Word, itunes, and a browser. Then let the mess go to sleep and see.

Will try to get back here and offer my findings.

Thanks.

Have had no issues with freezing since I removed the Patriot memory. Contacted them via website today with request to return my memory for a replacement... or refund if they've had others also complaining about this problem (urged them not to waste my / their time by sending me more bad memory).

The problem here is that the memory did *not* fail on boot or display any error messages. It registers as there in the "about this mac" and will run for a time with no problems. But the ghosts are there, and they do come and haunt the system given time. Every time.

I so hope that Apple isn't designing memory the way they've designed my iMac's hard drive... with cables that are custom-made so no non-Apple drives can be easily substituted.
