Nov 20, 2011 2:14 PM in response to KenChicagoby MiB4,mine froze on wake up also, but it was, i think, because i had time machine running always so it froze the sleep/wakeup also. do you have time machine? or mobileme? this site mentioned other issues causing freezes also: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1204593 i had also unchecked the security setting to ask for a password when waking and unchecked the graphics choice in the Energy Saver, not sure which help but it seemed to help even without changing the time machine setting. it was really hard to track what was causing freezes so it's hard to know since i tried so many things. but for sure, the freeze while i was on the computer, usually my browser, has stoped with turning off the automatic backups.

Nov 22, 2011 11:55 AM in response to MiB4by Bug Hater,I have had this problem since lion was launched. Only found a temporary solution to date. When I do a hard reset and Mac boots up again I close all my programs until only the finder remains then reboot the MacBook. This seems to avoid the freezing problem for a few days but alas it always comes back again. It does not seem to be related to chrome, contacts, MobileMe, auto backup, etc. only program I think may be part of the problem is mail as it has a habit of refusing to shut down and stops the reboot process after a hard reboot.

Nov 26, 2011 5:36 AM in response to martin_wby hammdawg,I too have had the hang problem since upgrading to Lion. I have called Apple Support and they have walked me through various machinations to clear stuff out, including
- Run the disk utility and repair
- Clear system and user cache
- Complete reinstall of the OS
In each case, the problem has come back. My hang occurs when the macbook air wakes up from sleep after some long period of time (a few hours). If I come back after a shorter time, it does not seem to hang.
Symptoms are
- I click on my trackpad, but as soon as I click in the password textbox, I get the flaming beachball of death
- The only recovery I can do is a hard reboot of the system
- After the system comes back up, a bunch of apps get relaunched but some of them I can't get to by clicking on the tool bar. I need to right click and quit them. Typically this is Chrome and Mail

Nov 26, 2011 6:50 AM in response to martin_wby thermos742002,It has been now over 2 weeks without a freeze coming out of sleep (Mac Mini Early 2009)
The only change has been to disable bluetooth / trackpad and use mouse.
Hopefully, the fix will come shortly.

Nov 26, 2011 8:37 AM in response to thermos742002by YoRafael,Yes, disabling the trackpad has been working for me for more than 4 weeks, but this issue needs to be resolved. I paid for my trackpad and i want to use it.

Nov 27, 2011 7:00 PM in response to hammdawgby hammdawg,I tried shutting off automatic backups using Time Machine. So far so good in that I have not had a hang since I did that.

Nov 29, 2011 12:40 AM in response to hammdawgby PaulSnelling,Ive goit the same problem - wish I'd seen this before I upgraded. I turned OFF the sleep mode, but still I get a freeze if I leave the machine for a while - overnight for example. This morning I couldnt even wake the machine from its screensaver slideshow. I'll try disabling the trackpad and auto backup on time machine to see if that helps...

Dec 6, 2011 3:24 AM in response to PaulSnellingby PaulSnelling,My problem is resolved. For what its worth, and in case anyone else has the exact same issue... I am running Sophos Home Anti-Virus, and time-machine. What seemed to be hapening was that when time-machine 'conslidates' its backups overnight, Sophos was scanning the files, and the resulting load was making the machine appear to halt. The resolution was to exclude the backup drive from live scanning - which is perfectly safe since all the files on there have already been scanned. Seemed to work for me, hope it helps someone else...

Dec 6, 2011 4:22 AM in response to PaulSnellingby hammdawg,This solution seems to make sense to me. I disabled automatic time machine backups and all of my problems went away. I have Sophos installed so will try excluding the time machine drive from anti virus checking. I'll then turn time machine auto backups back on and see if the problem goes away. Thanks!

Dec 6, 2011 9:51 AM in response to hammdawgby martin_w,Seems to be a problem with serveral causes. I don't have a virusscanner. Time machine doesn't proof to be a problem. Definately bluetooth connection with the trackpad. No trackpad gives a stable situation.

Dec 6, 2011 10:49 AM in response to PaulSnellingby MiB4,i will try that too. turning off automatic backups fixed my issue, but i've missed my automatic backups needed it the other day when i made a mistake. so i've excluded my time machine volume from sophos scanning and have turned on automatic backups. hopefully my no freeze days continue.

Dec 6, 2011 1:18 PM in response to martin_wby PaulSnelling,Martin_w, multiple causes for sure. Ive got two trackpads (home and work) - neither seem to cause a problem. Ive also seen suggestions that running disk repair does the trick - I did that and "defragged" using disk genius too - it seems to have made the machine faster, for sure.

Dec 20, 2011 8:57 AM in response to thornoby miss elisa,Just the same problem here, but I don't use Chrome. So Chrome can't be the culprit.
