Dec 20, 2011 10:26 AM in response to miss elisaby hammdawg,Mine was definetely fixed by disabling virus scanning on my backup drive that was being used by Time Machine. I first just disabled automatic Time Machine backups. The problem went away. I then turned backups back on and removed the backup drive from the list of drives to check for viruses in Sophos. It has been several weeks now and I have not had a hang. Previously, I was getting a hang every day when I woke my machine back up after a night of sleeping.

Jan 7, 2012 3:09 PM in response to PaulSnellingby fsbox,I tried the same. MacBook 2008, lion, freezing after standby, only when time machine backup disk connected. Excluded backup disk from Sophos on-access scanning. No more freezing after two prolonged standby periods.

Jan 19, 2012 10:30 AM in response to martin_wby Scott from OP,I have a MacBook Pro 2010 with Lion that also freezes after coming out of standby. It seems to only occur when I have it connected to an external monitor (essentially dual monitor) and my Time Machine backup. I am playing with some of the Energy Saving options to see if that helps.
I also have Symantec Endpoint Protection for anti-virus protection. This is required solution provided by they company I work for.
I would love to see a fix for this.

Jan 23, 2012 10:25 AM in response to martin_wby Troneas, suddenly my late 2010 MBA with 10.7.2 installed is having this problem. have had this computer for 8 months and only in the last few days did this problem start occuring.
it doesnt happen all the time, but after two or three attempts at waking up by opening the lid. i do not use TimeMachine (has always been turned off) nor do i use FileVault as ive read some posts blaming these two features. i also do not connect to an external monitor; and i only use Safari. ive ran hardware checks and all seems to be in order; and the machine works great otherwise.
I was very much tempted to re-install Lion but noticing its a common problem here i decided against going through that ordeal. will wait until 10.7.3 to see if it fixes the issue otherwise i suppose ill have to reinstall or take it back to Apple...

Jan 25, 2012 9:27 PM in response to martin_wby Monséran,Well, you might just be lucky. I have not had any problems with my iMac (Lion) freezing after waking up until I got a Magic Track Pad for Christmas. I also have a Symantec anti-virus running. Every time I come back to my computer, I have to use the on off button to get going again.

Jan 26, 2012 3:49 AM in response to Monséranby hammdawg,I had this problem and solved it by disabling virus scanning on my time machine backup disk. To diagnose it, disable automated time machine backups and see if the freeze problem goes away. Once you confirm that, then you need to configure Symantec to stop scanning your time machine disk. The issue for me was that time machine automated backup and symantec were competing for access to the drive while the machine was sleeping. This happened virtually every morning when I woke up my machine.

Jan 29, 2012 9:21 AM in response to martin_wby naganek,I'm sure that my issue is related to graphic card switching. I had no problems since I turned switching off.

Jan 30, 2012 6:39 PM in response to martin_wby Creeker3,I have a MBP early 2011 and TB display plus LaCie d2-quad external disk for backup via Firewire 800. Like others, the system froze after sleeping, regardless of whether backup was plugged in directly to MBP or via TB display and required power cycling to re-start. Setting Sophos anti-virus to NOT scan the backup drive solved the problem. There doesn't seem to be any reason to need to run anti-virus on the back-up since any problems should be fixed before backing up. Thanks to all for the fix info!

Feb 2, 2012 10:44 PM in response to hammdawgby fsbox,(MBP early 2008, Lion) Had another freeze or two despite excluding Time Machine Disk from Sophos On Access scanning.
Uninstalled Sophos. (Replaced it by ClamXav, including "Sentry" for my entire home directory).
Have not had the problem since then.

Feb 12, 2012 2:17 PM in response to Troneasby tayninhadviser,Wow, so much grief, so many possible fixes. Like the three blind men and the elephant.
Anyway, let me add to the confusion.
Late 2007 24" iMac now running OSX 10.7.3.
I went through many of the same attempted fixes. Blamed Chrome so switched to every other browser I could find, but still froze. Blamed Little Snitch so shut that down, but still froze. Blamed Snow Leopard so unwillingly upgraded to Lion, but still froze. Blamed Magic Mouse, so switched to a wired mouse, but still froze. Yadda, yadda, yadda...
Several days ago, I doubled my memory to 4GB. That _may_ have done the trick. No freezes since.
Of course, as soon as I post this, it'll sleep and freeze because Apple packs a little Freeze Gremlin inside every machine it ships.

Feb 13, 2012 5:30 PM in response to martin_wby wheretigerswill,I'm having a similar problem - freezing when I open it up. I have the 2011 MBP, and it's a relatively fresh install. I'd just used Migrate on it and installed updates to Lion, but now it's freezing when I first open it up. It's very frustrating, since my old Mac works fine and there's less stuff installed on the new one. Not sure what the problem is, so any insight would be much appreciated.

Feb 25, 2012 5:00 AM in response to hammdawgby mcoluccio,Disabling sophos on my external time machine back up drive seemed to work for me as well. Thanks for the tip!
