I called Apple Support and with the threat of a service charge and two helpful fellows, I received help.

1. Copy and backup your Domain file somewhere, ie; thumb drive, hard drive. restoring from "Time Machine does work, but be careful you upgraded to "Lion" not so long ago.

2. When you change the name of the file, use "get info" to see the file's name and extention and change it there.

3. Now follow these directions.

In iLife 11 the Domain name can be changed from the original. Mine was, "Domain iac.site2". 1st thing to do: locate your "Domain File" then Back it up. Next, in "Finder" go to the "Go" drop down Menu at the top of the screen, hold down the "Option" key and "Library" magically appears. Select this and you are taken to the real "application support" where you will find an "iWeb Folder" with a generic "Domain" File. Copy your current Domain file into that folder. Delete the "Domain" File you found in the "Application Support Folder" and then bravely rename your wedsite's domain file back to, in my case, "domain.site2". The extension may be hidden so don't double it. I'm sure you have already copied and backed up your large website file somewhere so you shouldn't worry if things go wrong. Just keep track of the original file. After you have copied and renamed your website's file, you start iWeb from the launch bar or the application folder. Then you get to welcome back your hard work. Whew! it works!

In Lion the Finder folder is now invisible. To make it permanetely visible enter the following in the Terminal applicaiton window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an applicaiton.

do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"

delay 1

tell application "iWeb" to activate

Launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open in the iWeb folder and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.

Still opens a mystery domain file??? I created a page in the new iweb and saved it, but there is still no domain file in the iweb folder??? I did a search for domain but the only file that shows up is the domain file on my desktop. I tried moving the renamed domain.site2 into the iweb folder but it still opens the domain file I cannot find!

Did you look in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder? The original domain that you have before you upgraded to Lion should be there. Did you try the Applescript application that is posted the script to?

Do you have a backup copy of the Domain file from just before the upgrade that you can bring over and into your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder?

After 2 hours on the phone with Apple Express tech the problem is solved. Go to Users/home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist and drag file to trash. Also delete com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile. Empty trash.

Open iweb, save a page. Close iweb. Open ~Library/Application Support/iweb/Domain. Drag Domain to trash. Empty trash. Put the Domain file from thumb drive backup in iWeb folder.

Launch iWeb and all the web sites that were backed up are there!!!!!

Hey OLD TOAD, you are my savior! This totally works. I can now jump in and out of several separate DOMAIN files without the drudgery of opening and closing the Application Support/iWeb folder and moving the domains around. After talking to the iWeb product specialist at Apple, they were straight up about the fact that iWeb is on its way OUT. Classic case of WordPress killed the iWeb star? Who knows. But thanks for this here work-around.

PS. I saved the Script Editor Application that I created into the same folder that houses my separate domain files so that I can easily find it when I'm ready to work.

Here is another option:

1. In "Terminal" type "write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"

2. Go into your ~/Library/Preferences directory and lock the "com.apple.iWeb.plist" file (use the "File > Get Info..." menu and click the "Locked" checkbox).

Now everytime you run iWeb (even if you click on the App in the dock) it will ask you chose a domain file.

Note: Locking the plist file prevents some other iWeb preferences from being saved, but these are all things that should be set the way you like them already (e.g default window positions, sidebar visibility, etc.)
