Cover flow on IPod Classic is out of order

The cover flow on my Classic is out of order, not alphabetical by artirst. Most of the albums are in order, but there is about a dozen that are after "Z" (for example Cream. Should be in the C section, where it is in ITunes. Any ideas?

Likely causes are the albums in question have been marked as Part of a compilation or that the wrong Sort Artist value has been set. See my article on Grouping tracks into albums for more details.

Compilations are not the problem. These are showing up under Various Artists at the end, where they have always been. The albums appearing at the end were in the correct order until a little while ago and then suddenly moved to the end of the line. For example I have 2 albums by the same group (Beau Dommage) which were both in the right place in the Bs and now one of the albums has moved to the end. I also note that of the albums at the end of the line some are albums purchased on iTunes and others are albums I uploaded from my CD collection. Can't find any logic, yet. Marc

Never hurts to reset the device just in case that helps.

Confirm that the Sort Artist fields for the affected tracks are actually empty instead of containing one or more invisible spaces. Note that iTunes groups on Album Artist (order amended by Sort Album Artist) whereas the iPod Classic groups on Artist (order amended by Sort Artist).

See the section Missing or Artist or Album not with others by same artist which explains that enabling one or both of Settings > Main Menu > Compilations or Settings > Music Menu > Compilations can affect where tracks appear in cover flow.

The iTunes Store tends to mark albums that include any featured artists, or form an anthology of an artist's work, as part of a compilation to mitigate some of iTunes historically poor track grouping issues. Depending on your preferences within iTunes this flag may not have any noticable effect in iTunes, but may control what happens on the device.

Even though you can't see where the problem lies it may help to amend the track details in the way I describe at Tried that, there are STILL too many covers and then resync the device.

I reset the IPod, no go. Here is how bizarre this is: one of the out-of-order albums is a single track from an album. This single track is in the correct place in the ITunes cover flow, it appears in the correct place in the IPod function on my IPad, but is out of order (after the Zs) on my IPod. How can a single track get out of order? When the name of the artist is correct (no spaces) and this is verified by its being in the right place elsewhere? Also, this single track was in the correct order on my IPod not too long ago. Very strange. Marc
