Ipod Backlight wont turn on. Is this fixable?

My ipod backlight wont turn on. I know how to use an ipod, and the backlight is turned onto "Always On" under the settings. But when you touch the scroll the light wont go on, and you can barley see anything on the screen. Is there a way to fix this problem? Itunes wanted to charge me $30 to ask this simple question over the phone...
