Airport extreme not showing in airport utility

I am running osx10.7 server and am attempting to port remap my airport extreme. When i open airport utility, it says that there are no airports in range, when i'm actually connected to an airport via wifi. I cannot figure out what the issue is. If someone can help me fix this issue and instruct me how to remap my rounter so i can use it to host websites and the like, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

Please try the following, using the AirPort Utility:

  • Run the AirPort Utility.
  • From the Utility's menu bar, select File, and then, Configure Other.
  • Unless you changed it, enter 10.0.1.1 into the Address field

The AirPort Utility should now be able to access the AEBSn. Please post back your results.

I am having the same problem. I am using a warranty replacement Airport Extreme, which worked fine when I connected it. Set it up with a password protected network and a guest network for internet only access with no password. After a couple of days the PC cannot get on the internet on the protedted network only the guest network. (error: The DNS server isn't responding) Next day the Mac can't access the internet on the protected network either, only the guest network. After pressing the reset button the protected network accessed the internet for about 1 minute. Trying to get into the Airport utility, can't find any Airport wireless devices. I tried entering the 10.0.1.1 but it still didn't do anything. Same thing happened on my original Airport Express before it packed it in altogether. I thought I had switched to Mac to get away from all this!

My airport utility was not recognizing the airport extreme wireless router. I followed the steps above to 1) open airport utility, 2) open file tab in the bar 3) open configure 4) enter 10.0.1.1 in the address box but skip the device password. Then for the next box that opened I did he device name/psswrd. It then showed me the airport extreme connection. I went through a few pages until the grayed out 'update' box would let me hit update. I know see airport extreme in airport utlity. Now I am going to try to add an airport express upstairs so that my wireless range expanded.

My Airport Extreme is working just fine, but I want to add Airport Express. The first step in my manual says to open Airport Utility, but I get the message "Airport Utility was unable to find and AirPort wireless devices. Make sure...rescan to try again." This is absurd as the computer itself is connected via wireless. (I have the same problem when connected by ethernet.) I have tried the utility from my iMac, my Mac Mini Server (ethernet), and an old computer running Leopard (wireless). The Airport Extreme works fine, but I cannot access its configuration.

I am running Lion 10.7.1 on three computers. I have two connected iPads and one connected PC.

When I tried "Configure Other" from AirPort Utility (as advised), both using and not using the password, I get the message "An error occurred while reading the configuration." I have tried the address given [10.0.1.1] and the address of my router [10.1.10.1]; neither works.

Without access to the Airport Extreme via Airport Utility, I cannot see how I might connect my Airport Express.

This may happen if your system accidentally switch the radio band.

Try this first:

Disable WiFi in the Menu Bar

Enable again

Check if the Airport Extreme shows up in Airport Utility

If so, choose the Airport Extreme

Click Manual Setup

On there:

If possible disable "Guest Network" (it cause trouble by switching constantly radio band for user convenience)

Give the 5GHz wireless a dedicated name

If you have no 802.11g (iPhone, iPod Touch) in the network:

Set radio mode to: 802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11.n only (2.4GHz)

If you need 802.11g

Set radio mode to: 802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g

You will reach these settings by holding option key (alt) while clicking on the Radio Mode pulldown.

Click Apply and wait for the Extreme to come back

After that,

check that your 5GHz capable systems use only the 5GHz name (SSID) when joining wireless.

For that, delete the 2.4GHz name (SSID) from the list of known networks in Systems Settings - WiFi - Advanced

Move the preferd network in the List at first place.

Rejoin wireless

Lupunus

PS ... to configure the Express, best connect a laptop via Ethernet to them. This eases the process a lot.

Addendum

You should set your PC to use the same local Domain as your Apple devices.
Apple use "local" for that and Windows (depending on version" something like "workgroup"
Change that on the PC to "local". That will ease the connections and the name resolution in your network.

If you have 10.7.1 systems that you've upgraded from 10.6.8.

Apple phone support told, that some network files can get corrupted on Upgrade, major updates or over time and should be deleted occasionally, especially if you have installed a new operating environment like Lion.

Switch OFF the wireless on the machine you want to tweak.

Delete from the system files:

* preferences.plist

* Networkinterfaces.plist

* com.apple.network.identification.plist

* com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

* (and any associated files like above that had ".orig" at the end)

Eventually you should also delete all related entry's from Keychain Access

Reboot and join the network again.

This files are in /library/preferences... on your system disk. As this folder is hidden in 10.7 Lion you have to use "go to" on finder to access the folder.

Happy networking - Lupunus

First, I am amazed and grateful for your help and advice.

I could not find any of the .plist files you mention, so perhaps they are hidden and I need to use terminal to make them visible (something I know can be done, but not from my human memory). However, I did the thing I should have done from the start—rebooted my modem, Airport Extreme, and computer, and used the reset button on the Airport. This has made the Airport visible in Airport Utilities. (I mention that, not for your edification, but to remind you that there are those of us out here who do not always do the logical thing first.)

Now I must see whether I can make my Airport Express work.

Thanks

As I wrote, in Lion the Library is hidden. You can access that folder from Finder using (Menu bar) the "Go to" and on there the "Go to folder" option and type in /Library

It's possible, that not all mentioned files are there. That's ok.

You will find the files on your system drive (not your home folder) as follow:

/library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist

/library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.sharing.plist

/library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/preferences.plist

/library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

If there are files in this folders with the same name but additional .orig at the end, delete them too.

Don't forget to reboot after that!

Then rejoin your wireless.

Also as I wrote: Best and easiest way to do that is to connect the Express for configuration temporarily with a Ethernet cable to any Mac you own; e.g. MacBook.

My Airport Extreme doen't show in the Airport Utility. When I open the utility, it displays "discovering Airport wireless devices" and locks in the "discover " mode. All buttons in the utility are grayed-out, so cannot access settings.

This is on my iMac (mid 2010) 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 running OS X 10.8.4 and my Airport Utility says it's 5.52 but when I look under my system info it shows it is 6..3 (630.34).

I discovered this trying to get a wifi ip camera going. It's supposed to be a plug and play but that isn't working out, so far.
