After Lion upgrade, slow performance

Since upgrading to LIon I am experiencing many issues with slow performance. I have a MBP with 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8 GB memory, 750 GB hard drive (just added about a month ago) with 464 GB free. I had none of the following problems with Snow Leopard.

When opening web pages there is a 4-8 second delay with beachball running constantly. (My speedtest.net results are 29 ping, 20 GB down and 3 GB up). When scrolling down a page there is a delay of appx. 1-2 seconds before the page scrolls. When clicking on a link it does nothing for appx. 1-2 seconds.

This is not just related to using the internet. When opening an application there are also significant delays. I also notice a significant increase in the heat generated by the computer and can even feel it on the left hand side of the touch pad.

I don't know where to begin diagnosing the problem and would appreciate as much detailed help as anyone can provide.

After I installed Lion about a month ago the performance on my iMac -- 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM and a 1 TByte hard drive that has 650 GBytes free -- has changed from "enjoyable to use with normally fast response and only occassional slow downs during intensive computing applications" to "frustrating as **** to use due to constant slow, slow, slow response and preformance." Simple tasks such as switching from one open application to another open app and even waiting for the Dock to slide up have on occassion taken as long as 10-30 seconds. Once when I switched to Safari from another open app it took more than a minute for Safari to completely ready itself. Tasks that I remember taking 1 or 2 seconds now can sometimes be measured in 5's or 10's of seconds. Even iTunes now sometimes "stutters" during song playback. And, I have often experienced responses to mouse and keyboard inputs that sometimes take 3-5 seconds -- example, I use the Aperture photo editing software and I've experienced many times where I type in a number value and then a few seconds later the 1st digit shows up in the typein box and a few seconds later the 2nd digit shows up. I have already posted my displeasure about performance under Lion on the Aperture community discussion page because Aperture is the app that has been degraded the most since my installation of Lion. But, all my apps now run noticeably slower tha they did under Snow Leopard. I am seriouslyly considering returning to Snow Leopard though I'm leery of "going backwards" due to the many changes that were "upgraded" by my installation of Lion such as the Mail messages data base.
