Apple Mail: Auto Correction stopped working

The spelling settings can be set per application, so it just sounds like you've turned it off in Mail.

Just check the settings in the Edit -> Spelling and Grammar menu and re-enable the 'Correct Spelling Automatically' option.

I have the same problem that Gerard has.. Mail just stopped auto correcting about a week ago or so...don't recall exact date, but recently.. Under Edit, there's a place that says Spelling and Grammar, and then Check Spelling, but "check spelling automatically" is greyed out and not an option. I've quit mail, and I've rebooted, etc.. nothing makes it change.. Very frustrating to not have that work now. Any ideas?

There must be others noticing this problem. I agree.. seems like since that update, I've lost that auto correct in MAIL.. 😟

Have you looked under Mail->Preferences and the Composing Tab? There's an option there for Check Spelling. Mine is set to "as I type" and Mail is still autocorrecting for me. I am running OS X 10.7, which may make a difference, although I never lost autocorrect in Mail.

Everything in settings is correct and has been. Re checked it anyway and all is as it should be. This is not Lion, it's Snow Leopard after latest update. Auto Correct does not work anymore and rebooting, etc, has not corrected it as well. Thanks for input though.

I've payed attention to this issue a few days ago and also has started to look, whether I changed the corresponding setting occasionally, but no, I never touched it. It really appears that the last system update has broke it. I'll file Radar bug, so that there will be at least any hope to get it fixed in some future Security Update (like they always do for the retired systems).

I deleted all of the files in the CACHES Folders, as stated above, but still auto spell check does not work.. Was there something else I have to do?? restart?? I didn't restart, but I quit mail.. and reopened.. does not work..

what is Die Edit Menu?? you mean, Mail preferences? thanks.

Still greyed out.. I can get as far as CHECK SPELLING, but nothing to choose after that.. all grey..
