My new MacBook is superb, but having progressed to the point where I shall soon part with my old Mac Mini, I notice that the MacBook doesn't have a telephone socket. Can I receive faxes with it? With the Mac Mini I have to switch off the router before it will receive faxes, but with the MacBook, without the router there seems to be no way to connect with the world outside.

You should consider an efax service such as efax.com or ringcentral.com. Both are excellent options and are only $5-10 a month.
Alternatively you'd want to get a printer that has fax capabilities. It's very rare to see people use their computers for faxing besides using the efax services above.
I actually receive faxes with my old Mac mini several times each week. I've seen reference to USB fax modems, so maybe this would be a good answer. Plus I do need to buy a new printer, so maybe I'll check on whether there's one which also faxes. I don't want to pay a subscription, I'd rather buy as product if I have to.
