Macbook Pro won't sleep when plugged in

1.

Please switch off in Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter the radio button: "Wake for network access". (But I am not sure, whether this is still like that on Lion).

2.

Open your terminal (Applications > Utilities), enter the following two commands and post here the result, so that we are able to help:

pmset -g

pmset -g custom

3. Open Application > Utilities > Console and paste here the last ten lines. Is probably a daemon trying to connect to the internet? Do you have something installed from novamedia, like launch2net?

I have a 2.4Ghz Core i5 15" MBP and have the same issue. When the power adapter is connected it wont sleep, the display goes black but the HD keeps spinning and the power light is steady. I have sleep images disabled too. In that state, if I unplug the power adapter it goes right to sleep.

The problem happens wether closing the lid, or selecting Sleep from the Apple Menu.

Killing 'powerd' fixes the problem (even though the daemon restarts itself). I never noticed this until I installed Lion last week.

I have a MacBook Pro (2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, GeForce 9400M/256, Lion 10.7.1) and same issue. When the power cord is unplugged, I can put the computer to sleep as usual - either Apple>Sleep, or close the lid. When the power is connected, nothing puts the computer to sleep.

The display does black out when choosing Apple>Sleep, but the machine is still running -- the LED in front is still on, the computer still hums, and if there's a USB mouse, it still gets power.

I've rebooted, no change. I switched off Wake for network access, no change. Any ideas? It worked fine under Snow Leopard. I don't know if it's Lion or the 10.7.1 patch, can't remember when it started.

I solved this issue by killing VMware Fusion (3.1.3) background networking processes.

Ok I've been researching and dealing with this problem for a few weeks now. I've read all the forums and tried all the recommended fixes. I'll list all that I did in the order that I did them. The sleep problem is fixed for me now. There are a few things in here that I never saw suggested, especially the last one. But first of all I have an Intel 27" iMac i7. Purchased new in Sept 2011. Love the machine, best Mac I've ever owned. I have 5 of them. I loaded it from my 2006 Intel 24" iMac, using Migration Assistant while running snow leopard. Soon after that I loaded Lion, sometime after that I started noticing the lack of sleep issues. It started out that it wouldn't auto sleep, but I would just sleep the machine using the power button or the Apple menu. About 3 weeks ago even those would not sleep the machine. Below is my process for hunting down this little bug. Between each of these a reboot and sleep test was performed.

1. Make sure everything is up to date.

2. Loaded a piece of freeware called PleaseSleep, worked for a while but then stopped working when the hardware buttons wouldn't work.

3. Unplugged all peripherals, turned off wifi

4. Turned off all sharing preferences

5. Plugged on an old USB mouse and turned off Bluetooth, including settings that allow Bluetooth to wake computer

6. Reboot into Safe Mode

7. Called apple support and performed a hard reset of the whole system, Shutdown Machine>Unplug From back of machine>Hold power button for 10 seconds>Plug back in>Startup.

8. Created a Spare User account in order to test a black or default set of user preferences.

9. Downloaded the 10.7.3 Combo Updater and reinstalled the Lion updates.

10. Switched into the Guest user account. Tested sleep (Success!!!!!!!) Rebooted back to normal Tested Sleep (Success!!!!!!)

I'm not willing to say that just #10 was the one and only answer. At this point I haven't turned on wake form Bluetooth yet. It will auto sleep and sleep from menu or by pushing power button, but to wake I'm pushing the power button. I do have all my Bluetooth peripherals back connected.

Killing powerd in Activity Monitor has solved the problem for me. At least for now. Hopefully it will continue to work after a restart.

sometimes there is a bluetooth in range, try turning off bluetooth, and see if that helps

For me it was definitely a print item stuck in the print queue. Open Print & Scan in system preferences, select any printer(s) with a red or yellow badge, and then click the "Open Print Queue" button to show the print jobs and delete any that have not completed. Seems too darned simple to work but it did.

You're a freakin genious! My MBP would not go to sleep when on power since last tuesday and reading your post, i realized i printed to the wrong printer on tuesday and never cleared the job, so i did that, Issue resolved!
