problem with firefox and quicktime

Hi,

I have a problem since downloading the new version of quicktime. My browser is firefox and anytime I go to a page that uses the quicktime plugin, all I get are the quicktime symbol with a question mark inside it. I don't have a firewall. I have also re-installed quicktime a couple of times and it still won't work. Is there something I can do to get it to work correctly?

Thank you.

I have just replied to a similar dilema elsewhere on the forum, and here it is (hope it helps)

I have recently solved my problem, which may help.
Everything is working great in IE once I upgraded to QuickTime 7.0.4, but my problem was with Firefox, my prefered browser. I too was getting the QuickTime symbol with the question mark, so here's what I did.
1. Made sure that in the QuickTime Settings-Browser-MIME Settings-Miscellaneous-Flash Media was set to 'off', 'unchecked'.
2. I had the latest version of Flash Player installed (version 8.0.22.0).
3. Closed Firefox
4. Opened Firefox
5. Yippeee!!
Hopefully this'll work for you.

I tried all that, even going as far as redownloading my flash player in that specific version, but I'm still getting that blasted question-mark/quicktime symbol. I've had this problem for almost two months now, and no one I've talked to can figure this out, and they've suggested similar courses of action as you have. "Frustrated" is an absolute understatement to describe me regarding this situation. Why doesn't Apple/Quicktime have direct, answerable support, like all the other good little product sites? [Boy would I like to give someone a piece of my mind right now... grr] Its so weird, I only have this problem with Firefox, but all Quicktime-related online activities work for me in my IE browser. I mean, wth? Does anyone else have thoughts on this?

[EDIT] I've decided as a last recourse, since I've already redownloaded Quicktime and my flash player, is to redownload my firefox. Hopefully that will yield something. If not.....there are no polite words. Grrrr.

lol replying to my own post... but the editing period ran out...

Anyway, technically "Edit2", I redownloaded Firefox and now have the latest version of it...........and the problem still exists. WHY. Whywhywhy? What the heck is going on?

I'd get rid of Quicktime completely if I could, but other minor browser-related things that would be affected. So, in the interim (until Apple/QT gets its head out of there and fixes this problem :P) I guess I'll just have to use IE to do any online video-viewing.

Grrrrrrrrr. Is this servicing the public? Jeez. (and, p.s., haha, don't suggest using IE completely just because QT loves IE and not FF; there are valid reasons FF is primary and not IE.)

I'm also experiencing trouble with QT 7 and FF 1.5. When attempting to open a page with QT assigned MIME content an error window pops up that reads:

Quicktime Failed to initialize. Error #0.
Please make sure Quicktime id properly installed on this computer.

I have unistalled and installed QT and FF twice and no difference.

Mozilla Discussion forums save the day! f yeah!

When you install QuickTime, or change your QuickTime settings, it may take over handling of Macromedia Flash files. However, this can be fixed quite easily. To stop QuickTime from handling Flash files, do the following:

Close Mozilla (or Firefox)
Open the QuickTime Control Panel
Select "Browser Plug-in" from the dropdown menu
Open up the MIME Settings dialog
Make sure "Flash file" is not selected. This is listed under Miscellaneous.
Click OK, and close the QuickTime Control Panel
Remove the file pluginreg.dat from your Profile Folder. This file will be recreated next time you start Mozilla
Remove npqt*.dll from your Mozilla or Firefox plugins folder. These files are not required, and can cause problems when QuickTime is upgraded
After doing this, you may need to reinstall Macromedia Flash Player. These instructions should be the same for both Windows and MacOS X, with the exception of the last step.
