In 10.4.11/Safari 413, both the toolbar History icon and the bookmark bar Bookmark icon display preview screens/text instead of my text-only history and bookmarks. This started after I quit and opened Safari. Preferences and Help dont help.

OK, there is a little and very indistinct region of three parallel lines at the bottom of the preview gallery, which is directly below the word "Today" under the slider track in the picture below. Click and drag that little gizmo up to the top of the frame and you will do away with the preview screens. (Thanks to BDAqua for that tip a week or so ago.)
Ok on Bookmarks icon but Tab icon displays Preview screen instead of new tab.
In Safari Preference under the "General" tab, do you have the following items selected?

That may be the problem.

Probably the Safari preferences plist file got a little corrupted. It happens.
