iPad 2 and Apple wireless keyboard (function keys not working)...

Hello all,

I just purchased the Apple wireless keyboard to use with an iPad 2. It pairs fine and I can type away but none of the function keys work (brightness, volume etc). 😕 Anyone have any ideas? I think these worked fine on earlier keyboard models.

All help gratefully accepted,

Irlandés 🙂

P.S. I'm running iOS 4.3.4 (8K2)

I just purchased the latest Apple BT keyboard, model A1314, and I have the same issue of none of the function keys doing anything on the iPad 2. You would think that the volume, play/pause and brightness buttons would work?? iPad is on 4.3.5. Looking at the picture in the Apple store of the BT keyboard they list as an ipod accessory the function button icons look identical to the one I purchase so it should be the latest. Perhaps they updated the macro's behind the function buttons for the new Lion OS and neglected to tell the iOS developers of the change to the hardware?

Hope the iOS dev team sort that out to fully support the A1314 BT keyboard. Might have to wait for iOS 5 to come out?

I think Apple need to be clear about this in the online store. It currently says that certain function keys which may work for a mac will not work on an iPad. They need to change this to say that none of the function keys are supported on an iPad - at least for the latest A1314 model they are currently selling.

Yes, I just spend $70 for this so-called IPAD ACCESSORY and the newest Apple Wireless Keyboard doesn't nothing other than input text. No volume control, no brightness controll, no scrolling or any other number of features. How DARE apple sell this as an iPad accessory when I does almost nothing to control the ipad. A rip off. I sure hope Apple is planning to remedy this situation.

My keyboard is new, I bought it six weeks ago, so it is not a matter of how DARE Apple. There may be something wrong with yours, or with the iPad, but this is not a universal issue and you guys are being a bit childish in your behavior. Take your iPad and the keyboard to an Apple Store if possible and see if the iPad links to other BT keyboards or if other iPads link to your keyboard. Have Apple make it right. Apple is not out to rip anyone off.

Ok Dahveed, can you please confirm the model number written on the back of the keyboard and the iOS version you are on. Bit pointless saying yours works so therefore ours is faulty without stating the exact model number you ended up buying six weeks ago. The A1314 has the new Lion OSX function button (F4) which has 6x2 small squares on it. If we can establish a link between model number and possibly even the iOS version then we have something for the Devs at Apple to focus on.

It's certainly not childish for someone to air their grievances over something that clearly appears to be something that needs addressing.

If anything, how dare an Apple representative not chirp in here sooner and start some form of fact finding to address something that could potentially have some unwanted backlash from consumers.

$70 is a fair amount of cash for a keyboard and the lack of function key compatibility with the iPad 2 is something that I have no doubt you would feel disappointed about if you were in the same boat.

I did in fact take the keyboard to an Apple store and this just resulted in the guy asking if I would like to return it rather than getting to the bottom of it. I did mention to him that I had read other reports on the Apple forums stating that they also had issues with the A1314 BT keyboard and his response was that it did not surprise him as it was a very new model and may not yet be fully compatible.

So really, if the common thread here is the A1314 model then Apple really should have tested this against the latest iOS version on the iPad 2 before listing it as a compatible accessory, or at lest reflecting their findings on their online store.

My keyboard's model number is the A1314. I am using iOS 4.3.5 as my profile plainly states. All my function keys work as expected; iTunes control, display brightness control, etc.

As has always been the case with these forums, no matter what they have been called or what software they run on, these are a user to user tech support forums. Apple has never posted answers to anything here. Occasionally Apple employees have participated here on their own time. But they are no longer allowed to identify that they are Apple employees now because folks always tried to take their assistance as official Apple policy. So unless you personally know someone is an employee, we are all just users. There will be no posts about the keyboard from Apple in the ASC.

My guess is that the forum hosts will likely let this thread become the dumping ground for keyboard complaints now. There is such a thread on every pet topic and folks can hammer away at how horrible Apple is to them. And the rest of us turn off further email notices of new comments and stay permanently away.

Ciao.

Just took delivery an hour ago of a brand new A1314 to use with my iPad1 and exactly the same problem here - function keys don't work (except the top key that brings up the iPad keypad). I have found loads of people saying the same thing - my software is all up to date. Surely if there are lots of people with the same experience, then it does say that there is a real problem here. Very frustrating, especially since no-one seems to have a proper fix. Just rebooting the iPad is never going to make a difference to something like this. If someone comes across a proper solution, then I'd love to hear about it.

Above poster is completely right. Wireless keyboard simply does not work as advertised and no amount of restarts is going to suddenly install functionality. Why are we disappointed. It is Apple fault. Here is the description from their website:

"Use the Apple Wireless Keyboard on your desk, on your lap, or anywhere within 30 feet of your Mac or iPad — all because of its built-in Bluetooth technology. Its compact design takes up 24 percent less space on your desktop than full-size keyboards, so you have extra room to move the keyboard around and mouse comfortably alongside of it. You’ll also feel a difference when you type on its low-profile anodized aluminum enclosure with crisp, responsive keys. Use the function keys for one-touch access to a variety of Mac features such as screen brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, Mission Control, and Launchpad."

Right there.

They are advertising it works "screen brightness, volume, eject, pause/play, mission control and launchpad.

I would settle for half of those.
