I finally got my MacBook Pro fixed by Apple!
Here are the facts:
- After multiple conversations (and hours) with Apple's technical support people, and several trips to the local "Genius Bar' at the Apple Store near me, the technical support person that I had been working with for several months helped me finally get the issue fixed. He asked me if I would be willing to send the unit to Apple. I told him yes, so Apple sent me a box to return the laptop in. Fed Ex picked it up on Feb 9th. It was returned to me today, Feb 14th.
- They ended up changing the "Main Logic Board 2.4Ghz' item number 605-3128.
- There was no cost to me since the unit was still under warranty.
- I know the hardware fixed the problem since I had an I-Movie file that exhibited the problem on the computer when I sent it in, and it no longer exhibits the problem.
- When I talked to the technical assistant at Apple, he warned that this may not be the solution for all of those of you that have posted something on this item.
- If your problem is exactly what is demonstrated on the first entry of this problem, I would recommend you contact Apple, and pursue the same remedy that has fixed my unit.
- I purchased my unit during the middle of 2010.

Frustrated, but now satisfied.
So, is there some reference number/ticket number that we can point Apple to, so that we don't have to continue down the same frustrating path as we have to date? I don't have an Apple store within a couple hunder miles from me, so I'll need to call Apple support and have them reference something, or I'm just going to hear a lot of the same ol' thing.

In thinking about it, though, I am able to get around the issue by rendering my video using iMovie on a Snow Leopard partition, as previously stated. Under Lion, I've got the exact issue specified by the original post of this thread, but if I go back to SL, I don't have the issue. If that's the case, could it really be a faulty main board? When you do 'About This Mac'->'More Info...' on your MBP that was fixed, does it still say 'mid-2010'? I'm wondering if they replaced your mid-2010 board with a more recent one (2011?), prehaps that has a newer graphics card that is more suited to Lion. I'm still convinced it's an issue with the graphics card, and of course if they replace the main logic board, they've replaced the graphics card.
The issue that I had (that no longer exists) is the diagonal 'artifact' or 'lightning bolt' that goes from the lower left of the screen to the upper right of the screen. I did not have some of the other items that were described in this string of messages.
In response to jj67030's comments. I know going back to Snow Leopard would eliminate the problem (for now), but not eliminate the root cause. I also have an IMac that has Lion, and it does not have the issue, so I was convinced the issue was a hardware-software compatiabilitiy issue, since the issue only showed up when I 'upgraded' to Lion. I am not sure if the issue was with the graphics card, or some other part of the Main Logic Board, but the issue is gone. I now feel confident that there will not be issues with any future Operating system upgrade (unless a different issue arises).

Oh dear, I have exactly the same problem and stumbled across this post.
Oddly enough, it first appeared in VMWare Fusion - and only after I had put my Mac to sleep previously. The video would scramble and corrupt to the point where it would drive me mad.
Eventually I would reboot to sort the problem.
Now, I've come to do some video work in Final Cut Pro X and iMovie and randomly I've having the old "lightening bolt" random corruption appearing on output
Annoyingly, I can export the project 3 times in a row and it'll be fine, the 4th time it'll be ruined. So annoying.
Looks like a trip to the Apple store is in order, I hope there's something that can be done to sort it, purchased Mid-2010.
Fortunately I haven't had that problem. But whenever I open the title brouser (T) when editing my movies after a few seconds Imovie closes and I get the I movie unexpectedly close would you like to send a report to apple.I wonder I they every review all these report and actuly do anything about them?... anyway this happens cosistantly and its driving me mad...!!!!

In my discussions with the Apple folks, they told me that they do not respond to any complaints made on this blog. They provide this site for the users to 'compare notes' and try to help one another. If you are expecting to get a response from them after posting something to this website, you will be waiting forever. You need to take the matter up directly with the Apple support staff. I learned it the hard way after waiting several months for them to resolve a problem that I previously noted above.
Thanks for the advise richardofoakland but I meant the reports one sends to Apple when a program unexpectedly quit. I have since spoke to apple and they recomend either reinstalling Imovie 09 or upgrading to 11. I would like to find out if all my projects will be saved???
YES! It's fixed in Mountain Lion!
I've been using Macs for nearly twenty-five years, and I've never seen Apple produce a more buggy, problem-plagued OS than 10.7 Lion. And that includes the transition from Motorola chips to PowerPC, the transition from PowerPC to Intel, and the transtion from OS9 to OSX. There were more bugs, bad features, poorly-implemented changes, and downright crappy design in Lion than in anything Apple's ever done, including the low-end Macs of the early '90s.
Anyway, I'm glad it's finally fixed.
Yes I agree that it is finally fixed with Mountain Lion. You have to make a slight modification to the project and re-finalize it but it's fixed.
They told us we were crazy and it wasn't an issue with the OS. What a load of B$!!! I wasted ridiculous amounts of time trying to deal with this to no avail and Apple was THE WORST when it came to addressing something like this especially when it was occurring with their hardware, their software, and their OS. Geniuses they are not online or at the store :-(.
A closed ecosystem is only acceptable when the support is there when they screw up. It was not there this time and I was quite disappointed in the entire experience. While I love the Mac and the platform, this is truly a risk we all take when buying into Apple's products - we are totally at their mercy to help and if they choose to ignore us they can and we suffer.
Also what good does this message board do exactly if Apple doesn't allow us to reference the other EXACT user experiences on the board and have them accept and admit that there is an issue that needs to be fixed and provide some kind of feedback to this community around what they are doing and the timing we should expect. Having no recourse is the worst in this type of circumstance.
Thank goodness that I can actually use my Mac for video again after almost a year of aggravation. Where's my lemon-law refund for that period?
