Opening Logic 7 (and earlier) files in Lion

Did this stop working under Lion?

Using Logic 9.1.3 I can open all Logic 7.2.x files under Leopard.

I understand 9.1.4 has problems so I never upgraded.

That's amazing.. the operating system prevents Logic from opening files it used to open in Snow Leopard (or Leopard) ??

How can that be? Do you get an error message?

That has to be a bug in the program.

Permissions been repaired since the Leopard install?

Was Logic 9 able to open those files under 10.6? Or do you mean that you were able to open them by running Logic 7, and that no longer works?

Were all those projects saved with Logic 7.0 or 7.2, and is that the version of the app you're trying to run?

And initially people couldn't open Logic 8 on lion but there has been a workaround to make it work - have you tried that with Logic 7.2?

Make sure you Save them as PROJECTS with ALL ASSETS... ( can’t remember the Old L 7 Terminology )...

Put them on an External Drive or Flash Drive... Plug the Drive into your L 9 Mac and Logic should / will Open them...

Worked for me Running Snow Leopard...

Which version of Logic 7 did you have? 7.0 or 7.2?

7.0 won't run on lion since it's not intel code. 7.2 might run if you use the trick mentioned in the threads about Logic 8, have you tried that?

I have the same issue, and no old machine on which to revert.

surely Apple doesn't expect people will simply accept the fact that their software won't open files made by that same software.

I can open files made I word 1.0 in word 12.2 And every other software in the WORLD is backwardly compatible in all software arenas for their own software files. This is absolutely ludicrous.

Has a solution been found/provided for people that never imagined a software would stop allowing files to be opened that we're originally made with it? Spare me the techno excuses... What's the solution for accessing these older logic files on LION, logic Pro 9???

Its unreasonable to suggest I locate older software and another machine to get past this.

I was a cLab / Notator user back in the day. On Atari,. Then on Windows. Then when Apple bought them out, I cross graded to a G4 (about 10 years ago) - developed 3 musicals, fully scored notation, etc. The G4 Died, so I invested in a shiny new MacPro tower last year. Am on Logic Pro 9.x.x (whatever the most current version of 9 is)

Was on Snow Leopard, Now upgraded to LION.

Got a request for one of my old pieces and went to load it for print... I got the:

"The format of this file is not compatible with this Logic Pro version. Please load first into Logic Pro version 7.2.1 or earlier"

I started trying to open other files and the older ones don't even give an error, they just fail without message. Some that I opened (when I suspect I was at 7.0) open fine. Some give the message above.

I did not keep my older versions of Logic around. Didn't see the point, nor would I have imagined Apple making this product NOT be backwardly compatible. The music industry is dredged in use and reuse of old material, and this is extremely ignorant of the Logic Pro team to do.

I really can't uninstall LION at this point, either.

I have probably 50 files that fall into the "can't get there from here" category now.

Logic 7.2.3 works perfectly on Lion. I know that you can't run the installer, but you can just copy the Logic Pro app from one disk to another.

In your situation, without another Mac or disk with Logic 7, and needing to install Logic Pro 7, I would install Snow Leopard on to an external disk, then install Logic 7 on to the same disk, then just copy the application on to the Lion drive and run software update from Apple to get Logic 7 to version 7.2.3. You should then be OK to open your old files; you do still have your XSKey don't you?

With Logic 7 installed, I have been able to open Logic projects from the good/bad-old Windows days (when version numbers went up to .8.1 between releases).

So...the proposed solution is I buy an external hard drive. Buy a copy of snow leopard, solely for the purpose of tricking the installer....which I can then move to LION and it will do the conversion. ... Yes, still have my xskey.

Does anyone else in the world see how wrong this is? If, in fact, logic 7 can RUN on LION, then why won't Apple, at a minimum, provide a special install for people they have screwed in this lack of backward compatibility situation? Logic Support told me I had to buy a g4, and install logic 7 to get round this, and tough luck otherwise.

I appreciate the advice John, and I probably will be doing this so I can get my stuff at least to midi format, OFF logic, and start using Finale and Sibaleous, since it's obvious that Apple has no interest in helping older customers they've screwed.

BEWARE using LOGIC. The APPLE Development team is TOO LAZY to work through the issues required to open older files. and that's the long and short of it. Don't depend on anything you make with LOGIC PRO to be support by them, clearly they could care less if it's more than a couple of years old. LOGIC PRO is coming out of my studio, and none of my producers are going to be allowed to use it going forward.

Unfortunately, moving forward (regardless of compatibility) is how Apple stays in business... their software (where they make little $) drives their hardware (where they make $$$). They know most of the Apple faithful will upgrade hardware regardless of inconvenience.

Do you know how many have upgraded their perfectly fine systems to run Final Cut X?

Same with Logic. Apple only supports current versions of software, keeps the Apple support call lines at a minimum, they also know that user forums provide 90% of the support.

It's a system that obviously works for them.
