in finder, what is the difference between duplicate, make alias, archive, and copy

In Finder, what is the difference between duplicate, make alias, archive, and copy? I want to have a backup of my files (Macbook OSX10.4.11) on an external hard drive that has already formatted for PC and contains other files I want to keep.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

1. Duplicate creates an exact copy of the selected items in the same folder. Make alias creates a shortcut to them. Archive creates a compressed zip; some file types are already compressed. Copy puts the files on the clipboard for pasting elsewhere.

2. A PC formatted drive shouldn't be used for Mac backups outside of a disk image(4GB size limit on FAT32 drives.)
