MIN and MAX Formulas returning 0

I have the numbers 1-8 in a column, one in each cell. When I try to find the minimum or maximum by using =MIN(A2:A9) it simply returns 0. This is also true when I try it with MAX. Am I doing something wrong?

1

=MIN(A2:A9) Result:0

It must have something to do with how the data got there. I am using the formula =IF(D31>-1,IF(D31<6,"1","")) to return a 1 to the cell A2 and =IF(D31>-1,IF(D31<6,"2","")) to return a 2 to A3 and so on...

If I just type in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 the MIN formula works, so I am guessing the above mentioned formula is messing with it. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
