Quicktime Player 10.1 removes export from DV format?

I have a couple iMacs, one that just got upgraded to Lion and Quicktime player 10.1. Other remains on Snow Leopard/Player 10.0.

In Player 10.0, I can open my .dv files (captured off Hi8 tape with a Canopus ADVC-55) and Save As to iPhone etc (m4v with H.264).

In Player 10.1, if I open a .dv file, Export is disabled and I can do nothing but play the file.

If I open an .mp4 or .m4v file in 10.1, the Export menu item is enabled and I can save a new version for iPhone etc.

Can anyone confirm that the ability to convert .dv format to other formats (notibly mp4/h.264) has been removed from Quicktime Player 10.1?

Yes and no. Files captured by QT v10.1 from a DV device remain export/share compatible with QT X under Lion on my system. Files captured using Vidi or converted to DV stream or DV/PCM MOV files using QT 7 Pro are no longer export/share compatible with QT X under Lion. However, all DV compressed files remain export and share compatible from within QT 7 Pro no matter what their source. (Did not test FCP, FCE, or iMovie DV captured files as I just erased my DV archive drive and was not willing to re-import new content for testing.)

My DV files are captured within iMovie, and all Share options, and Export... and Export for the Web... are disabled. I guess QT7 Pro (or 10.0) it is...

Thanks for updating that point. Will, for the moment, assume the same holds true for FCE and FCP captures.

So, I just verified on my end the behavior you have seen.

I tried capturing some Hi8 video via firewire from my Canopus ADVC-55 using QuickTime 10.1, By creating a new "Movie Recording." Works fine. Quality choices are Medium, High, and Maximum.

"Medium" produces a 1.6 Mbit/s reduced resolution (313x214) H.264 .mov file

"High" produces a 5.8 Mbit/s 704x480 H.264 AAC .mov file

"Maximum" produces a 30 Mbit/s 720x480 "DV/DVCPRO" PCM .mov file

In all cases, Export and Share options are fully functional.

Hmmm...so the DV/DVCPRO .mov file captured directly by QT 10.1 is somehow different than the .DV file captured by iMovie 8.0.6. Maybe the .mov wrapper makes the difference to QT 10.1.

In the end, I just want to get the (enourmous & numerous) .dv files I captured with iMovie into high-quality (~5Mbit/s) H.264, and then iTunes, for watching on my iMacs (and AppleTV). Wanted to press my Lion machine into duty for the conversion, but QT 10.1 is not cooperating. I guess I'll have to put QT7 on there.

So it seems. Not sure if the QT imported files are specially "flagged" to allow export or if the preset specification triggers the export capability. (I.e., its not the wrapper as I manually created DVCPRO/PCM content in MOV file container as part of my initial tests and they too could not be exported.)

In the end, I just want to get the (enourmous & numerous) .dv files I captured with iMovie into high-quality (~5Mbit/s) H.264, and then iTunes, for watching on my iMacs (and AppleTV). I usually prefer to use of the free HandBrake app for such conversions. I make my own custom presets to increase quality, improve motion detection and processing, filter repeated frames, custom PAR encode content, and comb filter as may be needed. I am, however, more liberal when it comes to data rates but my content targets TV2 compatible settings rather than full 1080p HD for storage on a new Thunderbolt RAID array if/when it ever gets here.

Sorry for opening this old post... I'm somewhat confused here about what is going on.

I've got quite a few DV files that I want to export via Quicktime Player because the older version of iMovie had troubles with anamorphic PAL data. When exporting them via QT Player, it should be possible to correct the aspect ratio to 16:9 (or so I believe, when reading the internet). I'm quite stunned that this not possible by using Quicktime Player 10.x...

I've tried Handbrake, but is does not recognise the DV files as valid. Does this indicate, that I've got to get an old Mac from somewhere that has QuickTime pro, and do the conversion on that machine? Does anyone know of other options?
